The City of Riverside, General Services Department is accepting applications for the position of GENERAL SERVICE WORKER (FULL TIME) to fill one (1) vacancy in the Building Maintenance Division
. The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to six (6) months. The General Service Worker performs and provides a variety of unskilled and limited skilled general maintenance and/or other related manual tasks for various departments. Under general supervision, the worker performs entry‑level maintenance, custodial, and general labor duties to support City operations.
Daily assignments may include facility maintenance, cleaning, moving equipment and materials, assisting skilled trades staff, and other manual labor as needed.
- Perform a wide range of maintenance, repair, servicing, and custodial tasks based on daily operational needs and City requirements; operate tools and equipment safely while adhering to all safety standards, policies, and procedures.
- Deliver, clean, collect, and maintain City trash and solid waste containers; provide cleanup services for homeless encampments and other designated areas.
- Dig ditches, trenches, and post holes; backfill excavations; load and unload soil, debris, and construction materials for various projects.
- Perform landscaping maintenance including cutting grass and weeds, raking and removing brush, mowing lawns, cleaning grounds, and assisting with planting, watering, and caring for shrubs and flowers to maintain City aesthetics and functionality.
- Assist skilled trades personnel across multiple crafts; serve as a flagger during roadway work and operate City vehicles as required.
- Deliver utility shut‑off notices to residential and commercial customers; distribute City locks, meter reading cards, and other materials; respond to citizen inquiries and service requests.
- Pick up and deliver mail, parcels, equipment, and supplies between fire stations and various City departments.
- Maintain assigned City vehicles by monitoring fluid levels, performing basic upkeep, and reporting mechanical issues or needed repairs.
- Assist with storm drain channel cleanup; support Wastewater Operations staff with general housekeeping, septic receiving, biosolids handling, sampling activities, and basic laboratory assistance.
- Assist in maintaining and preparing athletic fields, including hand grading, filling, and shaping baseball diamonds.
- Support building maintenance trades staff with painting projects, furniture and equipment moves, carpet removal and installation, and other construction or maintenance activities as assigned.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
High School graduation or satisfactory equivalent (GED).
ExperienceNone.
Licenses and CertificationsPossession of, or ability to obtain an appropriate, valid Class “C” California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
