Circulation Clerk

The North Riverside Public Library District is looking for a friendly, dependable, and helpful person to join our Circulation team. Circulation Clerks are often the first people our patrons see when they visit the Library and play an important role in creating a welcoming and positive experience.

This is a hands-on, public-service position that includes assisting patrons at the Circulation Desk, checking materials in and out, answering questions, helping with Library technology, shelving materials, and supporting the day-to-day work of the Library.

• Provide friendly, helpful, and professional customer service in person and over the phone.
• Check Library materials in and out and assist patrons with holds, renewals, fees, and other circulation transactions.
• Register new patrons and update patron accounts.
• Answer general Library, directional, and informational questions.
• Assist patrons with public computers, printers, copiers, scanners, and other Library equipment.
• Provide basic assistance with internet browsing, email, online forms, documents, and other common computer tasks.
• Assist patrons with smartphones, tablets, e-readers, and other personal devices when accessing Library resources.
• Promote Library programs, services, and resources.
• Answer incoming telephone calls and direct calls or questions as appropriate.
• Shelve and organize Library materials and help maintain orderly collections.
• Retrieve, process, and route interlibrary loan materials.
• Inspect returned materials for damage or other concerns.
• Assist with appointments and registrations for Library services and activities as needed.
• Help maintain an organized, welcoming, and efficient Circulation Desk.
• Follow Library policies and procedures and maintain patron confidentiality.
• Assist with special projects and perform other related duties as assigned.

• Comfortable working with the public and handling multiple requests in a busy environment.
• Ability to communicate clearly and professionally.
• Ability to remain calm and courteous when assisting frustrated or upset patrons.
• Comfortable handling money and completing transactions accurately.
• Basic computer skills and a willingness to learn Library technology and software.
• Comfortable assisting others with computers, printers, scanners, online resources, and personal electronic devices.
• Ability to follow procedures, pay attention to detail, and ask for assistance when needed.
• Previous customer-service experience preferred.
• Previous public library experience is a plus but is not required.

The position requires regular use of a computer and other office equipment; the ability to work at the Circulation Desk and throughout the Library; and the ability to bend, reach, stand, walk, shelve and retrieve Library materials, and lift or carry Library materials weighing up to 20 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.

This position averages 12-15 hours per week. Flexible availability is required. The schedule may include daytime, evening, and Saturday shifts based on Library needs. Regular and reliable attendance is required.
