The North Riverside Public Library District is looking for a knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and resourceful self-starter to lead the day-to-day operations of our Circulation Department. This is a hands-on position that combines staff supervision, scheduling, circulation responsibilities, and direct patron service.
The Circulation Supervisor works regularly at the Circulation Desk while also coordinating staff schedules, answering staff questions, handling patron concerns, and helping ensure that circulation procedures are followed consistently.
- Provide day-to-day supervision and support for Circulation staff.
- Prepare and maintain department schedules and arrange coverage as needed.
- Train and assist Circulation staff in department procedures.
- Work regularly at the Circulation Desk and perform routine circulation duties.
- Provide friendly, helpful, and professional customer service.
- Register and update patron accounts.
- Check materials in and out and assist with holds, renewals, fees, and other circulation transactions.
- Answer questions about patron accounts and resolve routine circulation issues.
- Handle patron complaints and refer more serious concerns to the Library Director when appropriate.
- Apply Library circulation policies and procedures consistently.
- Handle money, payments, cash drawers, receipts, and related recordkeeping.
- Maintain accurate circulation statistics and departmental records.
- Assist patrons with Library computers, copiers, printers, scanners, the online catalog/OPAC, and other Library technology.
- Provide basic assistance with smartphones, tablets, e-readers, and other personal devices, particularly when patrons are accessing Library resources.
- Help maintain and update Circulation procedures and training materials.
- Assist with onboarding and training new Circulation employees.
- Communicate with other departments regarding circulation issues and patron needs.
- Attend staff and supervisory meetings as needed.
- Perform other related duties and projects as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous public library experience required.
- Circulation or patron services experience strongly preferred.
- Previous supervisory, lead-worker, scheduling, or staff-training experience preferred.
- Ability to work effectively and professionally with patrons and coworkers.
- Ability to handle difficult patron situations calmly and tactfully.
- Comfortable handling money and maintaining accurate records.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to learn and confidently use an integrated library system and other Library technology.
- Comfortable assisting patrons with computers, printers, copiers, scanners, online resources, and personal electronic devices.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Dependable and able to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise good judgment.
- The position requires regular use of a computer and other office equipment; the ability to work at the Circulation Desk and throughout the Library; and the ability to shelve and retrieve Library materials at varying heights and lift or carry Library materials weighing up to 20 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
