Steamfitter - Traveling Maintenance Team Chicago
The Department of Military Affairs is looking to hire a Steamfitter based out of North Riverside, Illinois to be part of a Traveling Maintenance Team. This position under general supervision of the Military Maintenance Engineer, performs duties of a journeyman steamfitter on the installation, maintenance and operation of heating and air conditioning, maintenance and repair of sanitary fixtures and sewage.
Position Overview:
- Monitors and performs installation, troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance of all heating and air conditioning systems.
- Installs, repairs, and maintains hot and cold-water lines, pipes, soil pipe, traps, and appliances, including all fittings, for facilities such as water closets, lavatories, urinals, commodes, sprinklers, and showers.
- Plans work from initial layout to final assembly by interpreting and applying building plans, blueprints, sketches, specifications and other guides and codes.
- Initiates and submits proper material documentation for supplies/tools needed to perform facilities maintenance and repairs.
- Instructs and supervises semi/unskilled maintenance workers when assigned to assist with plumbing and heating/air conditioning work.
- Cuts and threads pipe, using stocks and dies, power threading machines, power saws, and pipe machines.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Requires experience necessary to qualify as a journeyman steamfitter.
- Requires 2 years of experience reading, interpreting and working from plans and sketches.
- Requires 2 years of professional experience working with tools, equipment, methods, and practices of the trade.
Employment Conditions:
- Requires the ability to pass a DoD background investigation and obtain a DoD Common Access Card (CAC) prior to hire or transfer.
- Requires statewide travel as part of a Maintenance Team within the normal workday hours.
- Requires a valid driver's license.
- Requires the ability to lift and carry 80 pounds, i.e., heavy boxes, supplies, etc.; ability to move heavy furniture and equipment.
- Requires being on feet for long periods of time; the ability to climb stairs and ladders.
- Requires being on hands and knees for extended periods of time.
- This position is considered very heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(e)).
- Requires the ability to withstand extreme temperature changes.
- Requires exposure to a variety of chemical cleaning agents.
- Requires possession of a valid Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) certification.
