Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, Welder / MIG/MAG/TIG
Summary
You will serve as a WELDER in the DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY at work sites including Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Trident Refit Facility Bangor, Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, and Intermediate Maintenance Facility.
Application EligibilityApplicants will only be considered for positions within their own UIC. For example, if you are within UIC 4523A, you will only be considered for positions within 4523A.
Duties- Identify and associate metals, alloys, and filler metals by code and standard markings.
- Produce welds to meet the acceptance standards of NDT, strength, tightness, or pressure tests.
- Use test methods for determining metals or alloys.
- Inspect completed welding projects.
- Use various welding machines and welding processes to weld piping parts or structures.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
- Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
- New employees must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
- Appointment of retired military members within 180 days after retirement is subject to 5 U.S.C. § 3326.
- Must be registered for Selective Service if born after 12-31-59.
- This may be a bargaining unit position.
- Must successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
- Must obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to duty. Failure to maintain clearance may result in withdrawal of the offer or removal.
- Drug testing is required. Failure to report or fail the test leads to rescission of the offer. Random testing may occur.
- Personal protective equipment (helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators, safety shoes) is required during shifts.
- Work may be performed in areas with harmful physical and chemical agents, including fumes, dust, heat, radiation, and chemicals. Medical surveillance may be required.
- May require exposure to high noise levels.
- May require travel on military and commercial aircraft, including CONUS and OCONUS sites, and may include remote or isolated locations.
- May require uncommon tours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Overtime or night differential pay may be required.
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must demonstrate through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary for the duties at the applicable level. Qualification emphasis is on quality of experience, not duration.
Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies in the job elements. Screening will be based on a minimum of two points on the screen‑out element:
Ability to work without more than normal supervision.
Applicants must meet the requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Job Qualification Handbook for Trades and Labor Occupations.
EducationThis position does not have an education qualification requirement.
Additional InformationSalary is based on geographical location and is subject to change with the annual local wage surveys in accordance with 5 CFR Part 532 for all employees whose official duty station is within the wage area boundary. For more information, visit relevant wage schedules.
