Summary:
The Director of Facilities and Grounds is a member of the school staff; supervises the maintenance and upkeep of the buildings and grounds; is responsible for overseeing mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems; conducts preventive maintenance, safety and energy conservation audits; supervises other maintenance staff and oversees contracted services; performs routine janitorial services, set up and tear down; makes suggestions for improvements to buildings and property, to processes and procedures;
and may have some responsibilities for larger building improvement projects.
Schedule:
Typically, Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m.
- 2:30 p.m.; on call evenings, weekends, and as arranged.
Job Description:
- Oversees all school buildings, property and equipment, as well as all maintenance issues related to them
- Monitors building systems, schedules heating and cooling according to the school calendar
- Interacts with contractors and service providers (lawn service, snow removal, heating and cooling contractors, cleaning services and so on)
- Supervises school maintenance employees
- Interacts with school staff, administration, parents, and other volunteers in a professional and helpful way
- Makes recommendations regarding school building and maintenance projects
- Prepares a preventive maintenance schedule for buildings and systems and implements it fully
- Maintains all logs (such as fire systems, snow, asbestos, boilers, and so on)
- Performs preventive maintenance; makes routine repairs to electrical and plumbing systems, mechanical systems, heating and cooling systems, doors and fixtures, hardware, furniture, wall surfaces, and so on; routine painting; oversees the care of all school property and equipment
- Makes recommendations for summer maintenance projects
- Submits orders to the school administrator; keeps an accurate and systematic inventory of supplies, replacement parts, and so on; makes recommendations for cost-effective changes to purchasing supplies
- Anticipates equipment rotation and major purchases and makes recommendations for them
- Opens and closes buildings as arranged
- Provides set up and tear down services for school events
- Performs routine janitorial services daily
- Oversees and insures the cleaning and preparation of the school buildings: routine, daily cleaning as well as major cleaning projects during breaks and summer recess
- Performs routine landscaping services as necessary and oversees the care of landscaping and all outdoor areas; organizes and supervises school clean-up events
- Performs snow removal and salting, in conjunction with the snow removal service and the school maintenance staff
- Oversees the school asbestos management plan; participates in required training and complies with all requirements
- Gives attention to safety and security matters on a regular basis; makes recommendations in matters pertaining to safety and security
- Contributes as requested in the budget process in all things pertaining to buildings, grounds and maintenance
- Attends to particular assignments and projects as assigned by the school administrators
Qualifications:

- Good communication skills (both written and verbal) with school staff, organizations, and parents
- Ability to keep complete and accurate records
- Willingness and ability to learn and grow into the position
- Knowledge of buildings and building systems, cleaning and maintenance procedures
- Skills in electrical and plumbing work, hardware, woodwork, and flooring maintenance; knowledge of and abilities with mechanical systems (heating and cooling, lighting); knowledge of roofing systems and their care and upkeep
- Flexibility and the ability to work independently
- Possession of a boiler operator's license or willingness to qualify for the license after employment begins
- Computer skills (email, memos, shared school files, maintenance files, building automation systems, and so on)
- Physical ability to climb ladders, lift and carry, move equipment and supplies
- Awareness of and commitment to environmental concerns
- Must complete "Protecting God's Children," background and drug testing, and follow AOD processes for interactions with students.
