Shop Assistant – Sheriff’s Office
Performs a variety of unskilled and semi‑skilled tasks to maintain the Sheriff’s Office vehicle fleet, equipment, and inventory. The position assists mechanics, techs, and quartermasters in their daily duties.
Requires physical labor and administrative skills related to maintaining work orders, obtaining materials, maintaining supplies, and keeping work areas clean.
Location- Law Enforcement Support Services – Robertsdale, AL
- Inclement weather, including extreme heat/cold, rain, etc.
- Light conditions associated with day and night.
- Travel throughout the county to various Sheriff’s Office locations and vendor locations.
- Maintains shop cleanliness and organization of tools, equipment, and supplies.
- Cleans, paints, lubricates, and repairs equipment.
- Maintains inventory and accurate records of invoices, service records, and other paperwork for vehicles and equipment.
- Removes graphics from vehicles using various methods.
- Removes equipment from vehicles after they are removed from service.
- Washes vehicles and equipment.
- Follows written instructions to assemble equipment.
- Performs inventory control and maintains sufficient stock, materials, and supplies.
- Performs road and field service repairs on vehicles and equipment to include tire service, battery jumps and fueling.
- Orders automotive parts and supplies; maintains cooperative relationships with automotive parts and supply vendors.
- Picks up and delivers vehicles, tools, parts, equipment as needed from various locations and vendors.
- Provides diagnostic support.
- Disposes of hazardous materials.
- Adheres to all safety procedures and policies of the department.
- Maintains a safe and clean work environment.
- Attends training as required.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Current, valid Driver’s License and insurable.
- Knowledge of equipment, materials, and supplies used in shop maintenance.
- Knowledge of applicable safety precautions.
- Skill in operating listed tools and equipment.
- Skill in operating a variety of computer programs, including Microsoft Office and other office equipment such as phones, scanners, printers, and copiers.
- Ability to perform routine maintenance on equipment and determine when and what kinds of maintenance is needed.
- Ability to troubleshoot and repair machines and equipment.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees and supervisors, and to communicate information clearly and correctly.
- Ability to write clearly, neatly complete and maintain logs, records, reports, and routine forms.
- Ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
- Ability to deal with non‑routine matters.
- Ability to complete work with minimal instructions.
- Ability to exhibit a high degree of integrity.
- Ability to assume responsibility and execute the supervisor’s orders and instructions.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, or divide quickly and correctly.
- Ability to read, write, and speak and interpret the English language.
- Ability to concentrate on a task over a period without being distracted.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule as needed.
- Ability to safely pull utility trailers.
- Ability to work overtime and respond to service calls during non‑standard work hours.
The work is generally medium work exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently. Activities could occasionally require heavy to very heavy work, exerting up to 100 or more pounds of force. The following physical abilities are required:
- Possess sufficient body strength to perform normal duties of the position.
- Crouching:
Bending the body downwards and forward by bending leg and spine. - Dexterity:
Primarily with fingers and in picking, pinching, or typing. - Grasping:
Applying pressure with the whole hand. - Handling:
Picking, holding or otherwise working with the whole hand. - Lifting:
Ability to lift and move objects. - Reaching:
Ability to frequently extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction. - Mental Acuity:
Ability to make rational decisions. - Repetitive Motion:
Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands and/or fingers. - Speaking/Talking:
