This position maintains the Museum’s building and grounds. Provides cleaning, building, and equipment maintenance and repairs, monitors operations, provides program support, and provides effective customer service in support of the Museum Division. This is a Rochester Hills GELC, Local 1984 position.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinates and performs all repairs and maintenance to buildings, grounds, equipment and vehicles. Ensures work performed is in the best interest of historic preservation based on best practices, archival images and information, and historical knowledge of the site.
  • Performs routine building interior and exterior inspections, cleaning, and maintenance including, but not limited to, painting, cleaning roofs and gutters, repairing windows and doors, and providing minor plumbing, mechanical, electrical and construction repairs in accordance to historic preservation standards.
  • Ensures all security systems are maintained in proper working order.
  • Performs general grounds maintenance duties including, but not limited to, planting, weeding, irrigation systems, trimming, erosion control, fertilizing, aeration, and brush removal. Ensures that all historic signage on the Museum grounds and locations throughout the community are well maintained.
  • Oversees the part-time Museum Custodian and seasonal grounds staff. Provides input on performance evaluations and training. Ensures all training is complete and safety protocols as well as Department and City policies are followed. Performs custodial services for backup purposes, as required. Orders supplies, as needed.
  • Supervises and serves as an ambassador to numerous volunteers and organizations that help to maintain Museum grounds.
  • Acts as liaison between the Museum and the Facilities and Grounds Maintenance Divisions. Oversees and ensures quality of work performed.
  • Operates all Division equipment including truck, backhoe, Gator, golf cart, historic vehicles, wagons, historic farm equipment, and various power and hand tools. Assists Grounds Maintenance staff with equipment maintenance, as necessary.
  • Operates snow removal equipment to provide back up support to the Grounds Maintenance staff, as required.
  • Sets-up and removes equipment, furniture, lighting and decorations for meetings, special events and exhibits.
  • Provides input for bid specifications and budgetary needs to the Museum Manager.
  • May be required to work extended hours including weekends and evenings, to assist with equipment and events.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications
    • Associate’s degree, Trade/Technical School Certificate or two years of college in facilities or grounds maintenance, landscaping, construction or an associated field; and two (2) years of related building and grounds maintenance experience OR a High School Diploma or GED equivalent and four (4) years of related building and grounds maintenance experience.
    • Basic proficiency with office computers and related applications.
    • State of Michigan driver’s license with no more than four (4) points currently on record.
    • DOT Medical Card, or the ability to obtain upon hire.
    • Experience operating motorized vehicles and hand tools including pickup trucks with dump boxes, front-end loaders, backhoes and utility vehicles.
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience deemed to satisfactorily perform all essential job functions, may be utilized.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Pesticide Applicator’s License or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date.
