Job Description

Reports to Operations Director / Campus Administrator.

The Lead Janitor is responsible for overseeing the cleanliness, safety, and overall appearance of the campus while leading and supporting the custodial team. This position performs routine custodial duties, conducts campus inspections, manages cleaning supply inventory, and provides training and guidance to janitorial staff to ensure district cleanliness standards are consistently maintained.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Custodial Operations
  • Maintain a clean, sanitary, and safe campus environment including classrooms, offices, restrooms, cafeterias, gyms, and common areas.
  • Perform daily cleaning duties including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, trash removal, disinfecting, and floor care.
  • Assist with special event setup and breakdown as needed.
  • Respond promptly to spills, emergencies, and urgent cleaning needs.
  • Ensure proper use and storage of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
Campus Inspections
  • Conduct regular campus walkthroughs and cleanliness inspections.
  • Identify maintenance, safety, or sanitation concerns and report issues promptly.
  • Complete inspection checklists and maintain documentation of findings.
  • Monitor restroom cleanliness, floor conditions, trash removal, and overall campus presentation.
  • Ensure compliance with district cleanliness and safety standards.
Staff Leadership & Training
  • Provide guidance, coaching, and daily direction to custodial staff.
  • Train new and existing janitorial employees on:
    • Cleaning procedures
    • Equipment operation
    • Chemical safety
    • District expectations
    • Proper sanitation practices
  • Model professionalism, teamwork, and strong work habits.
  • Assist supervisors with monitoring staff performance and accountability.
Inventory & Supply Management
  • Monitor and maintain custodial supply inventory levels.
  • Track usage of cleaning chemicals, paper products, and equipment.
  • Submit supply orders and notify supervisors of shortages.
  • Organize custodial closets and storage areas.
  • Ensure equipment is properly maintained and report repair needs.
Safety & Compliance
  • Follow OSHA, district, and health department safety guidelines.
  • Ensure proper handling and labeling of chemicals.
  • Promote safe working practices among custodial staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in a school environment.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Prior custodial or housekeeping experience required.
  • Leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of cleaning equipment, chemicals, and sanitation procedures.
  • Ability to train and lead staff effectively.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
