GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
To perform custodial, labor and minor maintenance tasks in and on police department buildings and grounds.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Climbs and works off ladders to check and replace light bulbs, clean light fixtures, etc. as necessary. This duty is performed weekly, about 9% of the time.
2. Performs minor carpentry duties and repairs electrical plugs and outlets. This duty is performed as needed, about 2% of the time.
3. Removes snow and ice from sidewalks and areas around buildings. This duty is performed as needed, about 1% of the time.
4. Utilizes appropriate equipment and tools including vacuum, power tools, dust/wet mops, hand tools, wet and dry vac, etc. This duty is performed weekly, about 7% of the time.
5. Utilizes appropriate safety equipment and procedures. This duty is performed as needed.
6. Assists in more complex and extensive maintenance, alteration, construction and repair. This duty is performed daily, about 6% of the time.
7. Cleans for assigned buildings including dusting surfaces, stripping and scrubbing floors, washing windows and venetian blinds, polishing floors and furniture, vacuuming and shampooing carpet, etc. This duty is performed daily, about 20% of the time.
8. Picks up trash and litter throughout assigned building and parking lots including picking up recycled paper from established locations. This duty is performed daily, about 25% of the time.
9. Cleans bathrooms and maintains proper supplies for facilities. This duty is performed weekly, about 15% of the time.
10. Reads labels and mixes chemicals according to instructions. This duty is performed as needed, about 1% of the time.
11. Makes adjustments for temperature settings as needed for heating and cooling. This duty is performed as needed.
12. Loads, unloads, transports and moves objects of various sizes and weights. This duty is performed
as needed, about 1% of the time.
13. Replaces broken windows and lights; fixes blind cords. This duty is performed as needed, about
1% of the time.
14. Cuts grass and cleans walks. This duty is performed as needed, about 7% of the time.
15. Prepares surfaces for painting and applies paint as necessary. This duty is performed as needed,
about 1% of the time.
16. Maintains a neat and orderly storage area for supplies and equipment. This duty is performed as
needed, about 1% of the time.
17. Performs a variety of site and facility inspections. This duty is performed as needed, about 2% of
the time.
18. Mixes cleaning chemicals and measures surfaces using basic math calculations. This duty is
performed as needed, about 1% of the time.
19. Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned
satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability
required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school or GED, plus specialized schooling and/or on the job education in a specific skill area;
e.g. data processing, clerical/administrative, equipment operation, etc, plus 2 years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Ability to read and understand documents such as policy manuals, safety rules, operating and
maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals;
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person-to-person and small
group situations with customers, clients, general public and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common
