Position

Instructional Assistant-Student Services (RMHS) – 37.5 hours per week. 10‑month temporary & grant‑funded, effective August 10, 2026. Contract may be renewed annually pending grant funding.

General Responsibilities

This role involves close interaction with staff, students, and parents/guardians, with a primary emphasis on the implementation of specialized or vocational education programs. The Instructional Assistant works under the direction of a licensed teacher, is able to react appropriately in crisis situations, and must exhibit initiative, creativity, and a collaborative team approach.

Qualifications
  • State and NCLB approved Paraprofessional designation in accordance with Illinois State Board of Education requirements (or ability to obtain).
  • Physical ability to lift/move materials and students up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to sit at a workstation for extended periods and move frequently between areas.
  • Organizational skill and ability to prioritize workflow.
  • Proficiency with computers, office practices, and equipment.
  • Professional appearance and positive attitude toward district and students.
  • Effective interpersonal skills; clear and respectful communication with students, staff, parents, visitors, and the public.
  • Awareness of diverse student needs, including physical and social‑emotional requirements.
  • Ability to adapt to all subject areas.
  • Valid driver’s license may be required.
  • Previous experience working with youth.
Position Expectations
  • Assist students under the direction of licensed staff, including but not limited to:
    • Implement classroom procedures and reinforce positive behavior.
    • Monitor and administer assessments as needed.
    • Reinforce organizational and note‑taking skills.
    • Grade materials for immediate feedback.
    • Demonstrate use of technology for instruction, drills, remediation, and homework assignments.
    • Help students achieve IEP goals.
    • Assist with non‑medical physical or personal‑care needs.
    • Support basic software usage for staff and students.
    • Learn and implement appropriate school technology.
    • Support and supervise students during non‑academic settings.
  • Assist licensed staff in various tasks, such as:
    • Organize and supervise off‑campus programs.
    • Perform classroom‑related clerical tasks.
    • Assist with lab set‑up and clean‑up.
    • Explain classroom procedures and materials to substitute teachers.
    • Preview instructional materials.
    • Act as a liaison to communicate and record student progress data.
    • Access student information systems (attendance, IEP, 504, health information).
  • Collaborate in assessment, academic and instructional support, student interactions, enforce safe behaviors, and enhance social growth.
  • Participate in professional development to enhance performance.
  • Cultivate inclusive and equitable relationships with staff, students, and community members.
