VacancyThe Valley View School District Transportation Department is seeking an individual to fill a School Bus Assistant Mechanic position for the school year.
Job SummaryUnder the supervision of the Director and Assistant Director of Transportation;
Responsible for conducting and assisting a variety of semi-skilled mechanical duties, maintenance repairs and safety checks of district vehicles.
- Conducts repairs of district vehicles and equipment.
- Makes minor paint touch-up and body repair.
- Assists the school bus mechanic with major repairs.
- Prepares written vehicle reports.
- Assists with the preparation of school buses for required State Safety Inspections.
- Required to drive routes where student transportation is needed.
- Displays safe work standards and high quality levels of service.
- May be required to conduct emergency road repairs.
- May be required to perform daily vehicle fluid checks.
- Maintain department equipment, tools and facility in accordance with OSHA regulations ensuring a safe and cleanly environment.
- Work with and around hazardous materials and may be required to participate in emergency clean‑up of hazardous waste or material spills.
- When necessary, other specific duties may be assigned that are in line with this job classification.
- Demonstrate the basic ability to gain knowledge and experience in all components of heavy duty vehicle maintenance in servicing of diesel engine vehicles and complete ASE certification.
- Ability to read schematics and has experience with body and engine wiring repair.
- Must have a basic set of tools.
- Knowledge of IDOT regulations preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Must have a 21 years of age or older license and possess or have the ability to attain an Illinois School Bus Driver license and permit.
- Serve as a role model for all students and perform their duties to create an environment that is conducive to providing students an enhanced and engaged learning opportunity.
- A Physical exam and negative T.B. test are required.
Salary is in accordance with the Maintenance Salary Schedule.

The work year for this position is 251 days. Work is performed in an automotive repair shop environment; subject to noise from equipment, fumes and performing heavy physical labor and outside; with the outside environment including exposure to inclement weather, heat and humidity. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 75 pounds consistently with heavier weight necessary t frequently stand for long periods, and sometimes work in uncomfortable or cramped positions, duties require physical strength and stamina.
Ability to work beneath vehicles and in close quarters performing analysis and repair work. Duties could include emergency call‑out after hours, various work schedules including rotational weekend assignments, as needed.
