Umpqua Community College is hiring a Custodian to support the daily care, cleanliness, and operation of campus facilities. From classrooms and offices to event spaces and common areas, this position helps create an environment where learning and community can thrive.
Responsibilities- Clean and maintain classrooms, offices, restrooms, common areas, walkways, and other campus facilities.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, strip, wax, buff, and burnish floors using custodial equipment and cleaning products.
- Clean carpets, windows, walls, furniture, fixtures, whiteboards, glass boards, sinks, and related surfaces.
- Clean, sanitize, and restock restrooms, including toilets, urinals, sinks, partitions, mirrors, and dispensers.
- Empty trash and recycling receptacles; collect and dispose of waste and recyclable materials.
- Remove graffiti, cobwebs, debris, and litter from interior and exterior campus areas.
- Clean exterior entrances, sidewalks, stairways, covered walkways, and other common areas, including pressure washing as needed.
- Assist with setting up, moving, and resetting furniture, classrooms, meeting rooms, and event spaces.
- Operate and maintain custodial equipment, including buffers, scrubbers, vacuums, extractors, and pressure washers. Report repair needs or safety concerns to supervisor.
- Monitor assigned areas for maintenance issues, vandalism, safety hazards, and security concerns.
- Maintain custodial supply inventories and request supplies as needed.
- Assist grounds and maintenance staff with assigned projects or campus support activities.
- Provide courteous assistance and directions to students, staff, and visitors.
- Assist with emergency response procedures, including evacuations and building closures.
- Lock and secure buildings and facilities as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of custodial methods, materials, cleaning chemicals, disinfectants, and equipment used in facility maintenance.
- Knowledge of safe work practices, including proper handling, storage, and disposal of cleaning chemicals and hazardous materials.
- Ability to safely operate custodial equipment and tools.
- Ability to read and understand instructions, safety data sheets (SDS), product labels, and workplace communications.
- Ability to work independently and follow established procedures and safety standards.
- Ability to identify routine maintenance or safety concerns and report issues appropriately.
- Ability to communicate effectively and follow oral and written instructions.
- Basic computer skills sufficient to access email, complete time records, and respond to work requests.
- Ability to complete required safety trainings, including blood borne pathogens and hazardous materials training.
- High school diploma or equivalent education or experience.
- Previous custodial, janitorial, facilities, or maintenance experience preferred.
- Possession of valid driver’s license. Must maintain an insurable driving record in accordance with the College’s motor vehicle policy.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
- Ability to frequently bend, stoop, reach, climb stairs, and lift or move up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, noise, and bodily fluids consistent with custodial work.
