Position: Highway Maintenance Specialist (Limited Duration)

Job Summary

Highway Maintenance Specialist – Limited Duration (expected to end February 1, 2027). Responsible for maintaining and repairing roadways, highways, bridges, and structures in the Region 3 Shady Maintenance Crew, Roseburg.

Responsibilities
  • Operate heavy and light equipment and tools to maintain and repair various road surfaces.
  • Assist with weather‑related emergencies, operating snowplows, de‑icer trucks, and clear snow from roadways.
  • Perform minor surface repairs, including pothole and concrete patching, inlay work.
  • Clear debris, brush, mow grass, spray roadside vegetation, and maintain fences, guardrails, concrete barriers, and milepost markers.
  • Maintain drainage systems, dig and clean ditches, repair culverts, inlets, and erosion control.
  • Maintain wooded areas: replant, prune, thin, or trim trees, shrubs, and ground cover.
  • Service and repair tools and motorized equipment, perform minor maintenance including janitorial work, landscaping, painting, and light carpentry.
  • Work in all weather conditions, handle noise, extreme heights, pesticides, and hazardous waste materials.
  • Move around rough terrain, bend, stoop for extended periods, lift up to 60 pounds, and be available after hours, weekends, and holidays.
Minimum Qualifications
  • One year of experience performing basic highway maintenance work; OR two years of general landscaping, maintenance, mechanical, farming, logging, and/or construction experience or training.
Special Qualifications
  • Current, valid Commercial Driver’s License A (CDL‑A) with tanker endorsement, no air brake or 5th wheel restrictions, and no manual transmission restrictions; OR ability to acquire a Class A CDL within 60 days of hire and remove restrictions within six months (training costs covered by ODOT).
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Must be able to respond within 30 minutes to emergency call‑outs at 3339 Old Hwy 99 S., Roseburg, OR.
Desired Experience
  • Experience in road maintenance, construction, logging, farming, mechanical or maintenance training programs.
  • Experience using hand tools and operating light and heavy equipment (tractors, excavators, loaders, dump trucks).
  • Experience working in hazardous conditions and completing basic mechanical repairs on light and heavy vehicles or equipment.
  • Experience working in a fast‑paced team environment with frequent changes.
  • Experience using computers and inventory or electronic time systems.
