Job Title: CUSTODIAN

Reports To: SUPERVISOR OF CUSTODIAL SERVICES AND MAINTENANCE

General Job Description:
The Custodian provides support to designated campuses, maintains an attractive, sanitary and safe facility for students, staff and the public; provides equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; and minimizes property damage, loss and liability.

• Arranges furniture and equipment to prepare for meetings, classroom activities and special events.
• Cleans assigned school properties and facilities (classrooms, offices, restrooms, corridors, carpets, graffiti removal, windows, walls, bleachers, stage, locker rooms, etc.) to maintain a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.
• Cleans facilities after extracurricular activities or athletic events.
• Distributes supplies and equipment (soap, towels, toilet paper, packages, furniture, TV/VCR carts) to appropriate parties.
• Inspects facilities to ensure safe operations and identify repairs due to vandalism, damage, or weather.
• Maintains supplies and equipment (cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuums, mops, etc.).
• Prepares facilities for daily operations and events (e.g., opening gates, lighting, cleaning, snow removal) to ensure safety and operability.
• Reports safety or operational concerns to appropriate personnel for timely resolution.
• Assumes building security duties (lock doors, turn off lights, secure premises) to minimize property damage and liability.
• Performs emergency minor repairs and cleaning as necessary.
• Wear protective gear as directed when cleaning up body fluids; use chemicals only as labeled.
• Work cooperatively with colleagues, supervisors and administrators; demonstrate ethical behavior; follow district policies and regulations.
• Maintain personal appearance and complete assignments efficiently as directed.
• Maintain exterior of buildings and grounds free of trash and debris; water and care for lawn areas as directed.
• Report electrical and mechanical problems to the Maintenance office.
• Carry out manual labor including lifting and moving materials, furniture, equipment, and supplies.
• Maintain custodial uniforms, equipment, tools and closets in safe and orderly condition.
• Account for supplies, materials, and equipment; install light bulbs as needed.
• Complete records and reports as required; use technology for work management, orders, and email.
• Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor, principal, or Superintendent.

Coordinates janitor helpers (assignments, timesheets, training) to ensure work is completed efficiently and effectively.

• High School diploma or GED preferred.
• Ability to work with large numbers of co-workers, students, and staff and maintain a positive attitude.
• Prefer experience in custodial work or related field.
• To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
• A valid Driver’s license and car insurance.

• Schedule activities; collate data; and consider factors when using equipment.
• Flexibility to work with others in varying circumstances.
• Work with data using defined processes; operate equipment with standardized methods.
• Interact with diverse individuals and utilize job-related equipment; problem solve with data following prescribed guidelines.
• Adapt to changing work priorities.

• Physical ability to perform manual work for 8 hours per day.
• Standing, driving, bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 50 pounds) and carrying (up to 50 pounds) as needed; occasional climbing.
• Work overhead, in tight spaces, and on ladders; full mobility of hands and fingers.

• Wear protective eyewear when performing yard maintenance.
• Read and follow all precautions and methods in handling chemicals, equipment, tools and materials.
• Complete required training; knowledge of universal hygiene precautions.

Hand tools, equipment, chemicals, vacuums, buffers, ladders, platforms, and materials related to custodial work.

The work environment varies from indoor facilities to outdoor areas; schedules depend on assignment. Flexibility, self-motivation, and ability to work under stress are required. Noise, temperature, and air quality may vary.

Salary and work year to be established by the Board.
