How You Will Make An ImpactThis role ensures building systems operate safely and efficiently, supports preventative maintenance programs, coordinates external contractors and maintains accurate maintenance records. The technician works closely with the Facilities Manager and other Facilities team members to support daily operations and respond to facility needs.
The Facilities Maintenance Assistant is responsible for the general maintenance of all VELCO facilities, ensuring that all building systems operate as designed to ensure safety, comfort, and efficiency for VELCO’s staff and the reliability of the grid. This position supports the Facilities Manager and specializes in routine and preventative general maintenance of our facilities. This position will support the coordination and escorting of external contractors and maintain maintenance logs and all necessary record keeping.
Responsibilities- Adhere to established operating and safety practices and perform routine and preventative maintenance activities on VELCO facilities (60+ buildings and grounds) including the Pinnacle Ridge campus, New Haven Operations Facility, warehouses, substations and structures and fixtures.
- Perform routine maintenance tasks such as painting, carpentry, partition rearrangement, snow removal, landscaping and general facilities upkeep.
- Provide support to other Facilities Maintenance staff with response to facility issues, including but not limited to climate control, odors, spills, damages, office organization; furniture, employee and equipment moves.
- Oversee and escort outside contractors and/or other vendors for maintenance of VELCO facilities, in collaboration with Facilities Manager. Monitor contractor/vendor performance to ensure work is completed according to specifications.
- Assist senior staff with the maintenance of building security and immediately respond to building emergencies and security issues in conjunction with the Facilities Manager.
- Assist with the performance of HVAC maintenance, servicing, and troubleshooting to ensure optimal system performance and efficiency.
- Directly support field personnel such as Substation Maintenance and System Protection staff.
- Assist Inventory warehouse personnel in receiving and delivery of materials.
- Maintain an awareness of and comply with all company safety and OSHA requirements such as forklift training, use of personal protective equipment, etc.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- A high school diploma or GED, technical education preferred.
- An apprenticeship or ability to join an apprenticeship program (Plumbing, Electrical, HVAC).
- A Vermont Commercial Driver’s Class B license or the ability to attain it is required.
The Facilities Maintenance Assistant is an entry level position. A minimum of 1 year of demonstrated, relevant experience is required, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
Knowledge/Skills- Ability to perform routine and preventative maintenance on building systems.
- Must be a self‑starter, able to set priorities, and work independently.
- Must demonstrate computer literacy (email, word processing, spreadsheets) and the ability to learn additional programs, such as computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and building management systems (BMS), as necessary.
