Custodian I

The Department of Public Works, Parking Services Division, is seeking a Custodian I for the division's Infrastructure and Technology section. This position will be required to work during shifts that start as early as 3 a.m. or end later into the evening. Shifts during weekends and holidays are standard. Work is performed both inside buildings, in garages, and outside in inclement weather.

This position adheres to strict safety protocols, including personal protective gear while performing duties, especially during heavy traffic hours in parking facilities. Operation of basic tools and materials to clean and maintain parking facilities is required and includes, but is not limited to, climbing ladders, stairs, ramps, and proficient use of cleaning products and power washers.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable working around a diverse community of parking customers, residents, and employees. It is highly desirable that they be a team player with the ability to work independently, be a self-starter, follow verbal and written directions, demonstrate proficiency in basic computer skills, and uphold professionalism while working with diverse populations.

Immediate or general supervision is provided by a Custodial Supervisor, Senior Custodian, or higher-level departmental personnel. A Custodian I is distinguished from a Custodian II in that the former performs routine custodial activities in the performance of traditional janitorial duties.

Typical duties include sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, scrubbing, stripping, waxing, and polishing floors; shampooing and steam cleaning rugs and carpets; cleaning restrooms; emptying waste receptacles; dusting and polishing furniture; washing windows; and performing minor repairs. Additionally, the role involves sweeping and washing outside walkways and entrances to facilities, operating a variety of hand and power tools and equipment used in maintaining and cleaning buildings and facilities, locking and unlocking building doors, monitoring equipment and supply inventory and recommending the ordering of needed equipment and supplies, replacing light bulbs and restroom supplies, reporting safety and sanitary hazards, and referring clients and users to appropriate personnel to resolve furniture arrangements or other problems as necessary.

Knowledge of basic materials, methods, tools, and equipment used in cleaning and maintaining buildings, materials and methods used in custodial work, use and purpose of common hand tools and equipment used in custodial work, cleaning solvents, soaps, and waxes used in custodial work, and standard safety precautions and rules used in custodial work is required. Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time, lift, carry, and pull equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds, push or pull heavy equipment, follow simple written and oral instructions, work outside and indoors, in all weather conditions, work irregular shifts, including weekends, holidays, and evenings, read and write the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public is also required.

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be six months of experience in building custodial and maintenance work. Proof of education such as, but not limited to, university/college transcripts and degrees should be submitted with your application and will be required at the time of appointment.

Employees must complete twelve (12) months of probation at a satisfactory performance level prior to gaining permanent status.
