Pay: $18.00 – $25.59 USD per hour

NMC is currently recruiting a Custodian in Environmental Services for a day/evening shift. The position is full‑time (80 hours bi‑weekly) generally 7:00 pm – 3:30 am, including every other weekend. Northwestern Medical Center’s mission is to provide exceptional health care to our community.

Prerequisites

Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Other Contacts: All hospital employees, patients and their families, and the general public.

Scope

Machinery or Equipment Used: Industrial cleaning equipment such as vacuum cleaner, mop, broom/dustpan, linen cart, trash barrel on barrel roller, trash compactor, washing machine, case knife, power cleaning equipment, auto‑scrubbers, extractors, burnishers, step ladder, dolly, computer, phone, beeper.

Physical Demands

Energy requirements for frequent mopping, pushing/pulling, lifting, etc. Occasional: kneeling, squatting, overhead reaching and lifting up to 55 lbs. Frequent: reaching, bending, pushing/pulling, lifting, carrying up to 14 lbs., walking with and without the hospital in all weather, repetitive gripping for approx. 3.5 hrs., constant use of hand.

Working Conditions

Potential spills of cleaning agents, mop buckets, etc., and exposure to blood‑borne pathogens when cleaning. Exposure to extreme temperatures, uneven surfaces, confined spaces, minor vibration, high elevations. Expected to work independently, subject to interruptions, high patient volume, and ability to adjust for absenteeism.

Essential Functions
  • Performs cleaning, minor maintenance, handling of waste, disposal and material handling using safe work practices and following policies and procedures for each task
    • Performs tasks in the correct order to maintain the integrity of the environment
    • Reviews work completed to verify the correct steps have been completed
  • Acts as a liaison to Plant and Property Department staff
    • Performs minor maintenance using safe work practices and follows policies and procedures
