Waterworks Maintenance Mechanic / Operator
The City of Saint Charles Public Works Department is currently recruiting for the position of Waterworks Operator. The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled technical work in the operation & maintenance of water treatment facilities and systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain all water treatment plant systems, pump stations, generators, gauges, pumps, filters, controls and equipment.
- Collect bacteriological and all other samples as required by MDNR.
- Monitors the performance of and operates and maintains all equipment, electrical systems, gauges, and charts in the treatment plant, pump stations, generators, pumps, filters, and other control systems;
Record data concerning plant operations - Charts lab test results for trend analysis and maintains accurate records of analysis and test results; evaluates data and writes reports as required.
- Collects samples and identifies concentrations of chemical characteristics of water required in accordance with local, State and Federal requirements; gathers and tests water samples for reports as required.
- Perform quality control tests on lab equipment and lab analysis; chart tests results for trend analysis; and evaluate procedures to assure accuracy of test results.
- Calibrate and modify instrumentation and control equipment including recorders and other water quality monitoring equipment.

Shifts:
6:30AM-6:30PM(AM) & 6:30PM-6:30AM(PM) & 4-hour Friday Shift- Saturday-PM, Sunday-PM, Wed-PM, Thurs-PM, 4hr-shift Fri(PM), Mon(PM), Tues(PM), 4-hr shift Friday(PM), Change to 12-hr Day Shift: Sat(AM), Sun(AM), Wed(AM), Thurs(AM), 4-hr shift Friday(PM), Mon(AM), Tues(AM), 4-hr shift Friday(PM), à Repeat )
- Assigned overtime as necessary to cover other shift openings.
- Mathematically proficient in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, geometry, trigonometry, and calculation of percentages, fractions, decimals, volumes, ratios, etc.
- Receives after hour emergency phone calls while on duty and notifies appropriate Public Works supervisors, on-call personnel, and Public Works Management.
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
- High school diploma or G.E.D. supplemented by two (2) years post-secondary college or technical training in biology, environmental science, chemistry or a closely related field and two (2) years' experience in a utility, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Working knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, maintenance and operation activities, including laboratory procedures.
- Valid Missouri driver's license required.
- Department of Natural Resources Class C (B, or
A) Water Treatment Plant Operator Certification Preferred. Minimum requirement of Class D Certification within 6 months with ability to obtain Class C or higher certification within 18 months of hire.
A Water Maintenance Worker/Operator must be capable of performing physically demanding work in a variety of outdoor and indoor environments. The position requires the ability to safely perform the following essential physical functions:
- Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull materials, tools, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds with assistance or appropriate equipment.
- Perform strenuous manual labor for extended periods of time.
- Walk, stand, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, and reach while performing maintenance and repair activities.
- Enter and work within trenches, excavations, vaults, pits, and other confined spaces in accordance with safety regulations.
- Climb ladders, stairs, embankments, and uneven terrain.
- Operate hand tools, power tools, valves, hydrants, pumps, and heavy equipment requiring manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
- Work in awkward positions and confined areas for extended periods.
- Distinguish colors, gauges, warning lights, and utility markings necessary for safe operation and maintenance activities.
