Head Custodian

The Head Custodian is responsible for overseeing the cleanliness, safety, security, and general maintenance of the assigned school building and grounds. This position provides daily leadership to custodial staff, coordinates building maintenance activities, and ensures the school environment is clean, safe, and welcoming for students, staff, and visitors. The Head Custodian works closely with building administration and the Maintenance and Grounds Department to support district operations and special events.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leadership and Supervision
    • Provide daily leadership, direction, and support to custodial staff.
    • Develop and assign daily work schedules and priorities.
    • Train custodial staff on proper cleaning procedures, equipment operation, and safety protocols.
    • Monitor employee performance and provide constructive feedback.
    • Assist with employee evaluations and recommend personnel actions as requested.
    • Promote teamwork, professionalism, and excellent customer service.
  • Building Maintenance and Operations
    • Ensure all areas of the building are maintained in a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition.
    • Perform routine custodial duties, including cleaning classrooms, offices, restrooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and common areas.
    • Conduct regular building inspections to identify maintenance, safety, and security concerns.
    • Complete minor maintenance and repairs within assigned responsibilities.
    • Submit work orders for repairs requiring specialized maintenance personnel.
    • Monitor HVAC systems, lighting, plumbing, and other building systems for proper operation.
    • Assist with preventative maintenance activities.
  • Safety and Security
    • Maintain a safe environment by following all district safety procedures.
    • Ensure compliance with OSHA, state, and district regulations regarding cleaning chemicals and equipment.
    • Secure the building by opening and closing facilities as assigned.
    • Respond appropriately to emergencies, alarms, weather events, and other urgent situations.
    • Maintain emergency exits and ensure walkways remain safe and accessible.
  • Event Support
    • Coordinate and complete room setups and tear-downs for school activities, athletic events, community meetings, and special programs.
    • Ensure facilities are cleaned and restored following events.
    • Provide custodial support during evenings or weekends as needed.
  • Inventory and Equipment
    • Monitor custodial supply inventory.
    • Order cleaning supplies and equipment within established purchasing procedures.
    • Maintain custodial equipment in proper working condition.
    • Recommend replacement or repair of equipment when necessary.
  • Communication
    • Maintain effective working relationships with administrators, teachers, students, staff, and community members.
    • Communicate building concerns promptly to supervisors.
    • Maintain accurate records related to inspections, supplies, maintenance requests, and custodial activities.
  • Other Duties
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities or Building Principal.

Supervisory Duties

Building Custodians

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Additional training in building maintenance or facilities management is preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of three years of custodial or facilities maintenance experience preferred.
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
  • Experience working in a school or public facility is desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of custodial methods, cleaning products, and sanitation practices.
  • Knowledge of safe handling of chemicals and cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to supervise, motivate, and train employees.
  • Basic knowledge of building maintenance systems.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships with staff, students, and the public.
  • Basic computer skills for email, work orders, and inventory management.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasionally lift up to 75 pounds with assistance.
  • Stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb ladders, and reach for extended periods.
  • Operate custodial equipment, including floor machines, vacuums, and power washers.
  • Work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Working Conditions

  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, noise, and outdoor weather conditions.
  • Occasional evening, weekend, and holiday work required.
  • Must respond to emergency building situations when necessary.
