Job Description
The St. Helens school district is hiring for a swing/evening custodian ens High School. Qualified candidate will have a high school diploma or GED or the equivalent of experience and education.
Job SummaryProvides a safe and clean school building for students, staff, and community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Follows and maintains knowledge of all District policies and procedures.
- Cleans areas as assigned (rooms, halls, offices, rest rooms, cafeteria, etc.), vacuums, shampoos, sweeps, scrubs, waxes, polishes, mops, and buffs all types of floor surfaces.
- Washes windows, whiteboards, walls, doors, and baseboards.
- Cleans and polishes furniture, windows, metalwork, and computer screens.
- Maintains indoor and outdoor lighting.
- Adjusts clocks.
- Keeps walkways, parking areas, and entrances clear and clean.
- Washes, scrubs, and disinfects restrooms and locker rooms; cleans sinks, fixtures, panels, and drinking fountains daily.
- Checks and stocks bathroom supplies.
- Clears spills (including bodily fluids) safely and appropriately, picks up trash, and responds to special custodial service requests from staff members with supervisor approval.
- Sets up, takes down, and moves tables, chairs, equipment, shelving, and partitions for meetings, athletic events, and other District needs.
- Unlocks doors and windows, turns on lights, prepares buildings for start of day, locks doors and windows, turns off lights, and secures buildings as assigned.
- Make minor repairs such as fixing sinks, tiles, lockers, and changing light bulbs.
- Empties and cleans waste containers.
- Reports safety, sanitary, and fire hazards promptly to Head Custodian and/or Principal/Assistant Principal.
- Interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff, and parents and resolves conflict professionally.
- Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required.
- Attends work regularly and is punctual.
- Assists in maintaining an inventory of supplies and equipment by reporting to lead worker or Head Custodian.
- Assists maintenance and grounds keeping as necessary.
- Attends staff meetings.
Provides supervision to student sweeper(s). All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.
Qualifications- High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) or equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous experience in sanitation or custodial positions preferred.
- Works well with others from diverse backgrounds; can interact appropriately with students and staff.
- Communicates fluently verbally and in writing in English; reads and interprets documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Can add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; computes rate, ratio, and percent.
- Applies common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule, or diagram form; deals with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
- General knowledge of computer usage preferred.
- Appropriately communicates with students, teachers, parents, and community members.
- Certificates as determined by the District, including the ability to obtain a valid CPR/First Aid card, forklift certification, state pesticide applicator license. Previous hazardous communication and asbestos training preferred.
Regularly required to talk or hear; frequently required to walk; use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, and smell. Must regularly lift or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally more than 100 pounds. Requires close, distance, color vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, and peripheral vision.
Demonstrates strength and dexterity to operate cleaning tools, tractors, and drills.
Noise level is usually low to moderate, occasionally high. Exposed to wet or humid conditions, moving parts, high precarious places, cleaning agents, hazardous chemicals, outdoor weather, extreme heat (boiler rooms), risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
SalaryAs negotiated in the OSEA bargaining agreement.
