Painter
The Painter preserves the condition and appearance of all interior and exterior surfaces on campus by applying paint and protective coatings. Essential duties include calculating and providing cost analysis, estimates, and time frames for all types of finish and coating jobs. The role involves purchasing and recording all products necessary for assigned jobs, repairing and prepping surfaces appropriately, and applying applicable coatings.
The Painter designs and creates vinyl graphics using computer-aided design software and plotters for all informational and directional signage on campus, maintaining the university branding. Additional responsibilities include installing, taping, and finishing new gypsum wallboards, repairing damage to existing sheetrock, blockwork, brick, and other surfaces, and applying stains, varnishes, lacquers, alkyds, and epoxies to wood and metal furniture, doors, frames, floors, and handrails.
The Painter also lays out and stripes parking lot spaces, safety and directional markings, crosswalks, and curbing, applying high build asphalt marking paint using specialized spray equipment. The role provides guidance and training to others as required and performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities include extensive knowledge of solvents, chemicals, and VOC off-gassing levels, extensive knowledge of paint types and compositions and volatile organic compounds, knowledge of wall coverings and panel finishing for remodels and new construction, knowledge of the different types of stains and finishes for the restoration of furniture, knowledge of industrial coatings and application practices, knowledge of relevant safety requirements, and the ability to maintain a safe working area.
Good computer skills and the ability to use the software applications necessary to create graphics and signs, organized thinker with exceptional attention to detail, good verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to follow verbal and written instructions, and the ability to effectively organize and prioritize work as well as concentrate on multiple tasks simultaneously.
Required qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent, one to three years of painting experience, and a valid driver's license. Preferred qualifications are not specified.
Physical demands include heavy physical activity, the ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects, the ability to climb, balance, kneel, stoop, and reach, the ability to use close vision and be able to focus, regularly required to talk and hear, frequently required to sit, stand, and bend at the knee and waist, and walk, and the ability to have repetitive wrist, hand and/or finger movement to type and work on computer, finger dexterity, and hand-eye coordination to work on computer, telephone, and related office equipment.
Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
The role is non-exempt and will work indoors and outdoors, routinely exposed to inclement weather conditions and extreme temperatures. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and working occasionally be required to wear a respirator.
Hours of work are Monday-Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm.
