Custodian, 1st Shift

Overview

Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota seeks to hire two Custodians for the 1st shift to provide all the cleaning, waste, and recyclable removal services, snow clearing of all entrances, carpeting and hard floor maintenance, and other traditional tasks as needed.

1st position – Monday to Friday 4:30 am to 1:00 pm (40 hours per week)

2nd position – Monday to Friday 5:30 am to 2:00 pm (40 hours per week)

The beginning rate of pay for this position is $20.00/hour during the 6-month probationary period. After the probationary period, compensation will increase to $21.00/hour. After 1 year from the date of hire, the hourly wage will vary based on the shift and current union contract (estimated at $25.36/hour).

This is a union position. Upon successful completion of the probationary period, the full Macalester benefits package will be offered. Successful candidates are required to join the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 70.

• Routine cleaning including dusting, vacuuming, washing/disinfecting surfaces, collecting and hauling trash, care of hard-surfaced and carpeted floors, cleaning restrooms, showers, elevator interiors and pits.
• Periodic duties such as washing exterior windows, stripping and refinishing floors, replacing light bulbs, removing snow by shoveling or power snow blowers, and performing necessary event set‑ups.
• Complete and maintain supply order requests to ensure adequate stock.
• Observe building conditions, submit work orders for repairs, perform minor repairs, and report loss, damage, breakage or unsafe conditions immediately.
• Maintain security of assigned keys, building lock-up/unlock and room openings per instructions.
• Train, work with, or coordinate student employees of Facilities Services.

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum of 1 year professional custodial or janitorial experience, highly preferred.
• Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
• Ability to use automatic and powered cleaning equipment based on professional experience.
• Ability to walk or stand for long periods of time.
• Ability to write short work orders describing maintenance problems.
• Physical demands: bending, twisting, squatting, crawling, and climbing; lifting up to 50 lb under various conditions (mop bucket, boxes, trash container).
• Must possess a valid Minnesota Driver’s License.
• Must complete a criminal background check (federal).
