The Town of Salem is seeking a dependable and motivated Custodian to provide daily custodial care, minor maintenance, and general upkeep of the Salem Police Department and surrounding grounds. This position plays an important role in maintaining a clean, safe, secure, and professional facility for employees and the public. The position reports to the Parks and Properties Foreman and Superintendent of Facilities and works closely with Police Command Staff.

FLSA: Non-exempt

Accountability: Reports directly to the Parks and Properties Foreman and Superintendent of Facilities and indirectly Police Command Staff.

  • Perform daily cleaning and sanitation of offices, restrooms, common areas, floors, windows, and other interior and exterior spaces.
  • Sweep, vacuum, mop, buff, and wax floors; remove trash; dust surfaces; and maintain custodial supplies and equipment.
  • Identify building maintenance concerns and recommend appropriate repairs.
  • Perform basic handyman work, including minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and general repairs.
  • Accept deliveries and set up or break down rooms for meetings, activities, and special events.
  • Maintain sidewalks and exterior areas, including shoveling and sanding during winter weather.
  • Assist the Municipal Services Department with snow-removal operations and, when qualified and assigned, operate snowplows, salt trucks, or related vehicles.
  • Respond to urgent facility needs during evenings or weekends when required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Requirements:
  • High school diploma, vocational or technical school education, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least one year of custodial, facilities-maintenance, or related experience.
  • Knowledge of cleaning techniques, custodial equipment, and basic building-maintenance practices.
  • Ability to work independently, organize assignments, follow instructions, and complete work promptly.
  • Ability to use cleaning supplies, tools, and equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to send and respond to email.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Successful completion of a Police Department background investigation.

  • Annual paid time off: 2 weeks' vacation, 15 sick days; 11 holidays.
