Scope of Position: The Building Attendant is responsible for cleaning, sanitation and general upkeep of buildings and grounds, including set-ups and takedowns of furniture and equipment for programs and events.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

Professional: Ability to work in a Christian environment in harmony with The Salvation Army Mission Statement; professional conduct with diverse individuals; self-discipline for repetitive tasks; ability to work with limited supervision and in a team; good judgment and initiative.

Equipment Used:

  • Scrubber and general sanitation equipment, custodial supplies, hand tools; cleaning chemicals for various surfaces.
  • Hand tools, power tools, and specialized cleaning equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide routine cleaning (sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting) of interior and exterior surfaces and furnishings.
  • Regular cleaning and sanitation of restrooms, shower rooms, locker rooms, fitness areas and kitchens.
  • Provide furniture and equipment set-ups and takedowns for programs and building uses.
  • Remove trash, litter, and recyclables; clean high-traffic areas such as lobbies.
  • Maintain exterior areas including sidewalks, paved areas, and landscaping.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repairs to building systems and grounds.
  • Maintain inventories of cleaning supplies and products throughout the facility.
  • Operate and locate shutdown procedures for systems such as lighting, HVAC, fire alarm, water, electrical, and gas.
  • Maintain appearance and functionality of facilities and grounds components (doors, windows, floors, roofing, walls, ceilings, furnishings).
  • Set-ups and takedowns for programs and events; demonstrate integrity and trustworthiness.

Flexibility and a cooperative spirit are essential characteristics in this role.

Physical Requirements: Regularly sit; communicate; reach with hands and arms. Vision requirements include close and distance vision. May walk or stand on varied surfaces; stooping, kneeling, bending, lifting up to 50 pounds unassisted.

Working Conditions: Schedule may include mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends and holidays; exposure to various temperatures, heat, cold, rain, snow, wind and humidity. Interactions with diverse individuals, including those who may be upset.

The candidate may be required to pass a criminal history check. Convictions will be evaluated based on the circumstances. Reasonable accommodations may be requested to perform essential duties.
