Position: Grounds & Maintenance Staff

Grounds & Maintenance Staff

Under the general supervision of the Facilities Manager, the Grounds/Maintenance staff has the primary responsibility for maintaining the grounds (campus lawns, athletic facilities, parking lots, sidewalks, etc.) in such a way as to promote a positive appearance, cleanliness, and health and safety. It is the role of the grounds/maintenance staff to maintain equipment (including but not limited to mowers, trimmers, plows, trucks, etc.)

and to follow daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance schedules for the District. The grounds/maintenance staff may also be responsible for performing additional duties not stipulated below, such as locksmith duties. These additional duties consist of general building and grounds maintenance, including moving operations (classroom materials and supplies), snow removal, salt application, etc.

Qualifications

Required Education/Certification

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent / Vocational School Diploma.
  • Valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Possess, or obtain within 1 year of appointment, a Class B (or higher) Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Air Brakes endorsement.
  • Possess, or obtain within 1 year of appointment, a Commercial Pesticide Applicator License with categories 3A (Turf), 3B (Ornamentals), and 6 (Right-of-Way).

Preferred Education/Certification

  • CDL School Bus (S) and Passenger (P) endorsements.
  • First Aid / CPR / AED Certification.
  • OSHA 10-Hour General Industry or Heavy Equipment Operator Certification.

Required Experience

  • Minimum 1–2 years of experience in groundskeeping, commercial landscaping, or facility maintenance.
  • Proven experience operating light and heavy grounds equipment (e.g., zero-turn mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, string trimmers).

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with athletic field layout, lining, and turf management for competitive sports.
  • Demonstrated experience with commercial snow and ice management (plows, salt spreaders, snowblowers).
  • Basic mechanical experience with small engine troubleshooting, blade sharpening, and routine equipment servicing.
Responsibilities & Duties
  • Maintains proper mowing, watering, aeration, and fertilization schedules for natural grass properties.
  • Performs routine maintenance on artificial turf fields, including sweeping, power-grooming, checking infill levels, removing debris, and inspecting seams/lines for safety.
  • Prepares, lays out, and marks practice and competition athletic fields according to sport-specific rules and guidelines.
  • Cleans and maintains outdoor facilities, including parking lots, athletic fields, walkways, and stadiums.
  • Keeps parking lots and sidewalks free from snow and ice using equipment such as plow trucks, Gators, Bobcats, snow blowers, snow brooms, and salting equipment.
  • Performs regular preventative maintenance and minor repairs on all grounds equipment (e.g., changing fluids, sharpening blades, cleaning equipment).
  • Maintains equipment inventory, tracks supplies, and develops purchasing requisitions while remaining mindful of assigned budgets.
  • Follows and completes the District's daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance schedules, including collecting exterior garbage and placing trash in closed dumpsters.
  • Inspects school grounds and facilities daily to ensure clean, safe operations, identify necessary repairs, and check shrubbery, lawns, and flower beds.
  • Reports animal/vermin/insect issues, supply/repair needs in advance, and all health and safety hazards to the Facilities Manager.
