Job DescriptionPurpose: To keep buildings and grounds safe, neat, clean, and presentable at all times. An employee in this class performs routine manual work, cleaning and maintaining buildings. The employee performs recurring tasks in accordance with established practices and cleaning schedules. When problems arise, the employee refers them to the head custodian or supervisor. Supervision is direct with frequent inspections to assure completion of assignments in accordance with instructions and standards of cleanliness.

Physical RequirementsDepending on the job duties assigned for the day, employees may perform lifting and pulling on a more frequent or less frequent basis. Job duties may change throughout the week depending on the needs of the individual department or school. Bending, squatting, twisting, kneeling, crouching, and being on feet for extended periods may be frequent. Walking backwards is a common requirement, especially when assisting in finishing floors.
Lifting up to 50 pounds, more than 50 pounds with assistance may be common. Climbing ladders up to 25 feet may be required on occasion.
- Some knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
- Willingness to learn skills in the use of custodial equipment used in routine cleaning.
- Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions.
- Strip and refinish floors.
- Maintain appearance of grounds and parking areas.
- Assist any way deemed necessary by principal/assistant principal/head custodian/custodial manager.
- Scrubs, sweeps, mops, vacuums, finish and burnish floors in rooms and hallways.
- Dust and arrange furniture.
- Wash windows, woodwork, walls and other surfaces.
- Scrub and clean restroom fixtures, walls, and floors.
- Replenish tissue, towels, and soap in restrooms, classrooms, and offices.
- Replace light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.
- Empty wastebaskets and other trash receptacles.
- Lock and unlock doors.
- Sort and store material for recycling program.
- Report to head custodian or supervisor any damages or needed repairs.
- Pick up paper and other trash in school buildings or on school grounds.
