Job Description
The purpose of this position is to "seek to bring forth and establish the cause of Zion." The Central Plant Operator is a senior support role that ensures efficiency and safety while providing steam and chilled water to Headquarters Facilities. This role is expected to operate the Central Plant in an effective, efficient, and safe manner in order to maintain high standards and organization within the plant.
Pay range for this position will be $31.00 - $33.00/hr depending on experience and education.
Responsibilities- Operate and maintain boilers, chillers, cooling towers, and auxiliary equipment such as electric and transfer pumps; sand filters and strainers; chemical, brine, and condensation tanks; reverse osmosis, carbon filters and water softeners.
- Plant operations, security, and operating decisions during shifts, weekends, or holiday periods without supervision.
- Monitor and manage chiller and cooling tower loads to optimize efficiency and effectiveness of the chillers and flat plate.
- Test water samples for chemical content, conductivity, and pH. Adjust the chemical pumps to maintain the required chemical content.
- Coordinate with Supervisor and vendors for re-filling of chemical tanks.
- Follow lock out tag out form procedures properly.
- Convert between gas and oil firing modes during periods of curtailment within an hour of curtailment notice.
- Visually inspect all plant equipment for proper valving, operation, temperature, pressure, vibration, and water and oil levels.
- Monitor, calculate, and record the data from the gauges.
- Maintain a log of all operations performed in the common Excel file.
- Monitor, operate, and control the steam distribution and condensate return system to and from steam heating locations.
- Adjust the equipment, as necessary to maintain effective, efficient, and safe plant operation.
- Assisting the mechanics or contractors in repairing and maintaining all plant and distribution equipment.
- Is responsible for reporting trouble calls and operating irregularities to supervisor upon discovery.
- May be asked to help train new operators.
- Take on additional shifts as needed.
- Performs other tasks as assigned by Management.
- May not leave facility during shift.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of an approved apprenticeship in steam boiler plant operation.
- 5 years journeyman level experience in a related field (plumbing, electrical, mechanical, HVACR or controls).
- Ability to work 12‑hour shifts, day shift for seven days straight, seven days off, night shift for seven days straight, then seven days off and return for day shift. This includes weekends, holidays, and inclement weather.
- Ability to arrive at work in any weather condition at scheduled time.
- Ability to use computers and control software, including Microsoft Office and Schnieder HMI controls.
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, squat, push, and pull for extended periods of time.
- Ability to react to system changes in a calm and timely manner to ensure system continuity.
- Ability to fit into confined spaces such as manholes, crawl spaces, attics, etc. as well as around steam pipes, boilers, etc.
- Ability to pass all required safety and equipment certifications and training.
- Ability to work in a professional manner with others as well as alone without constant supervision.
- Positive attitude.
- Ability to work as a team player.
- Ability to follow directions from management and supervisor.
- Valid driver's license.
- Eyesight allows accurate monitoring and recording data on controls and gauges.
- Ability to independently lift and position objects weighing as much as 50 pounds.
- Minimum of 20/40 vision with or without corrective lenses and not less than 120 degrees combined horizontal peripheral vision.
- Completion of specialized military training.
- 3 years of steam boiler plant journeyman level experience.
