The Library Housekeeper is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and welcoming environment for library patrons, staff, and visitors. This position performs routine custodial services throughout public and staff areas, including reading rooms, offices, restrooms, meeting spaces, and entryways. The ideal candidate takes pride in maintaining high standards of cleanliness while working independently and providing excellent customer service in a quiet, professional environment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:- Vacuum and spot-clean carpeted reading rooms, aisles, staff offices, and public areas.
- Sweep and mop hard surface flooring, including tile, vinyl, and entryways.
- Dust and sanitize tables, chairs, computer workstations, furniture, and shelving units.
- Clean interior glass doors, glass panels, mirrors, and low windowpanes.
- Empty trash and recycling receptacles throughout the facility and transport waste to designated disposal areas.
- Clean and disinfect restrooms, including toilets, urinals, sinks, countertops, mirrors, and diaper-changing stations.
- Replenish restroom supplies including toilet paper, paper towels, hand soap, and other consumable items.
- Disinfect high-touch surfaces such as door handles, handrails, elevator buttons, light switches, and drinking fountains.
- Maintain cleanliness of employee work areas, meeting rooms, break rooms, and public gathering spaces.
- Report maintenance concerns, safety hazards, damaged equipment, or supply shortages to management promptly.
- Safely operate and maintain custodial equipment, tools, and cleaning supplies.
- Follow all safety procedures, chemical handling guidelines, and OSHA regulations.
- Maintain a professional appearance and provide courteous interactions with library patrons and staff.
- Perform additional custodial duties as assigned.
- Minimum of six (6) months of custodial, janitorial, housekeeping, or commercial cleaning experience.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Basic knowledge of proper cleaning techniques, chemicals, and equipment.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism while working in public facilities.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States.
- Ability to successfully pass any required background screening in accordance with library or municipal policies.
- Knowledge of OSHA safety standards and proper chemical handling procedures.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) communication skills are a plus.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain high cleanliness standards.
This position works primarily indoors in a public library environment that serves patrons of all ages. The work environment includes reading rooms, offices, meeting rooms, computer labs, public spaces, restrooms, staff areas, and entryways. Employees are regularly exposed to cleaning chemicals, dust, trash, and normal custodial conditions. The position requires frequent walking, standing, lifting, bending, and repetitive motion throughout the shift.
Work may be performed during mornings, evenings, weekends, or holidays depending on library operating hours and facility needs. The successful candidate must maintain a clean, professional appearance and contribute to a safe, welcoming, and customer-focused environment for all library visitors.

- Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
- Push carts, trash containers, vacuums, and other custodial equipment throughout the facility.
- Perform repetitive hand and arm movements while sweeping, mopping, dusting, and sanitizing. Physical and Mental Requirements:

- Safely climb step stools or ladders as needed to reach designated cleaning areas.
- Work independently while managing multiple tasks and priorities.
- Maintain attention to detail while following established cleaning schedules and safety procedures.
- Exercise sound judgment and professionalism when working around patrons, children, and staff.
