Under the direction of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, Lead worker or other qualified crew member, the Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker performs miscellaneous labor while performing duties associated with maintaining the State highway system. This position may be subject to seasonal shift change. Performs manual labor, operates light equipment, and power and hand tools while performing duties such as paving, pot-holing and crack-sealing;

drain and ditch cleaning; sign and delineation installation, maintenance and repair; landscape irrigation and maintenance; brush and tree trimming; storm clean-up; litter and graffiti removal; traffic control; and other related duties. May be required to perform miscellaneous laboring work in connection with the maintenance of the State highways and safety roadside rest areas. Perform custodial duties such as emptying trashcans, sweeping and sanitizing facilities, litter pickup, cleaning bathrooms, replenishing supplies, and other related work.

May perform minor repairs to facility equipment such as tightening loose bolts, nuts, and screws, and unplugging toilets. May be assigned throughout various San Bernardino Locations.

For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions.
