Job Summary
Custodians provide general cleaning and custodial care and support for assigned campus buildings, facilities, structures and adjacent areas and/or portions thereof, including, but not limited to, campus offices, classrooms, science laboratories, art rooms, auditoriums, gymnasiums, locker rooms, health and childcare centers, student residences, patios, entryways, walkways, and workshops. Custodians may work independently or as part of a custodial team.
Responsibilities- Empty trash receptacles daily, remove loose trash and dump trash containers adjacent to buildings as directed.
- Replace liners as needed, flatten old boxes and place in designated areas.
- Replenish lavatory supplies, restock custodial closets, and assist lead workers in determining future needs.
- Keep all dispensers full and an adequate supply of materials on hand in the custodial closet free of debris, personal items, and in a neat, orderly fashion.
- Floor care: sweep, scrub, strip, mop, wax and buff floor.
- Vacuum and shampoo carpeted areas.
- Clean assigned rooms to the satisfaction of department management and the campus standards of quality.
- Dust all furniture, polish and clean as needed.
- Replace all lamps and inform lead custodian of burned-out lamps too high to reach on a six-foot ladder, or that has ballast problems.
- Lock and unlock doors and windows as required to assure building and equipment security.
- Lock and unlock doors as necessary and secure rooms after being cleaned.
- Report unlocked doors to Public Safety.
- Direct inquiries for admittance to offices to Public Safety.
- Participate in moving tables, chairs, desks, files, and other equipment and furniture.
- Promptly move furniture and properly take care not to damage the furniture, floors, walls or doors.
- Store in proper areas.
- Assign time to work orders.
- Participate in setting up special events, assemblies, registrations, athletic events, and commencement.
- All set-ups are to be done on time and as requested.
- Difficulties should be reported to Event Scheduling.
- Under direction of a lead custodian or department manager, assist in covering the duties of absent custodian.
- Perform all other classification related tasks as assigned within the broad guidelines of the Classification and Qualification Standards for Custodian.

- Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions to ensure safety.
- Ability to operate and care for custodial equipment and supplies applicable to the position.
- Ability to use custodial systems such as those used to track work orders and two-way radios for communication.
- Ability to observe safety requirements and safe work practices and methods as required.
- Ability to perform work involving regular physical activity.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative work relationships.
- Some positions may require ability to move up to 50 pounds.
- The equivalent to a high school diploma
- Duties may involve the use of a state vehicle which would necessitate possession of a valid California driver's license and the successful completion of the campus Defensive Driving examination. Some positions may require ability to move up to 50 pounds
- Valid CA Driver’s License
The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.
Anticipated hiring range:
Step 03 $ 3,601 per month for qualified candidates
Classification hiring range: $3,461 (Step
1) - $4,752 (Step 20)
