Job Description and Duties

Within the Division of Equipment (DOE) and under the direction of a Highway Mechanic Supervisor and/or a Caltrans Heavy Equipment Mechanic Lead worker, the incumbent will work in a shop and/or field environment, constructing, inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and servicing various equipment used in the Department's fleet. The role includes completing records and reports, using computer equipment for various tasks, and may assist in instructing or directing helpers, apprentices, or other employees.

The incumbent must possess a valid class C driver license and assume responsibility for safeguarding materials, tools, equipment, and facilities, and use personal protective equipment (PPE). The position may require work outside or traveling to field mechanic locations or highway maintenance stations and may involve inclement weather. Job assignments may include travel, rotation, shift changes, and varying work hours and days.

Eligibility may be determined by your score on the Caltrans Heavy Equipment Mechanic exam. Candidates who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who are new to state civil services employment must be on the state examination list. Special Requirements
  • A valid California Drivers License (CDL) with class, expiration date, endorsements, and restrictions provided on application.
  • Pass a drug screening prior to hiring.
  • Valid and unrestricted Class C driver’s license required for operating a state-owned or leased vehicle.
