Required Documents

Applicants must submit a copy of a valid State of California Driver’s license and a DMV printout indicating no moving violations for the past three years. Please reference the Traffic Painter exam (Exam #N118) when submitting this information. Failure to submit a copy of your license and DMV printout will result in disqualification.

Position Overview

The position of Traffic Painter will provide lead supervision and work with a small crew of laborers in painting lined and worded traffic control markings on pavement. The incumbent will install traffic warning signs, paint guard rails, barricades, raised traffic bars and similar devices and perform related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Option I:
    Equivalent of six months full-time experience as a laborer in the Traffic Safety section or the equivalent of six months full-time experience as a Traffic Sign Worker in the Alameda County classified service (non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts).
    License:
    Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license with no moving violations for the past three years.
  • Option II:
    Equivalent of two years full-time experience in traffic painting. License:
    Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license with no moving violations for the past three years.
Knowledge and Abilities
  • Knowledge of use and maintenance of spray guns, brushes, stencils, and other traffic painting equipment.
  • Knowledge of provisions of the California Motor Vehicle code as they apply to traffic painting operations.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and practices.
  • Ability to provide direction and guidance for a small crew in the use of traffic painting equipment.
  • Ability to measure and place traffic line markings accurately; follow oral and written instructions; prepare simple reports.
Examination Components

The examination will consist of a review of applicants’ applications to verify possession of minimum requirements. Candidates who possess the minimum requirements will move on in the examination process. The remaining steps of the exam process and the weight assigned to each step are yet to be determined. Candidates will be notified of these prior to commencement of the examination. Candidates must attain a qualifying rating on each portion of this examination.

Medical Plans
The County offers four types of Medical Plans. For a specifically identified HMO Plan, the County contributes up to the full family premium, prorated based on work hours up to 50% of the standard hours in a pay period. Employees pay any additional premium costs if they choose an alternate HMO or PPO Plan. If an eligible employee waives all medical coverage through the County, a monthly stipend may be provided.

Dental Plans
The County offers two Dental Plans: PPO and Dental Maintenance Option (DMO). The County contributes up to the family coverage for both plans as long as the employee works at least 50% of the standard hours in a pay period. The PPO option plan design is 100% Preventative, 80% Basic Care, 80% Major Care with a $45 per individual deductible and an annual maximum up to $1,450 per year.
