About the Structural Maintenance Yard
The mission of the Structural Maintenance Yard (SMY) is to provide superior, professional maintenance services to ensure Recreation and Park facilities foster a sense of community pride and well-being, and meet the high expectation and need of park patrons. The Structural Maintenance Yard is organized into 9 shops, 15 trades:
Carpenters, Cement Masons, Electricians, Heavy Equipment Operations (includes: Operating Engineers, Truck Drivers, Laborers, and Riggers), Iron Workers, Painters, Roofers, Plumbers, Steamfitters, Sheet Metal Workers, and Stationary Engineers. Structural Maintenance has three major functions: routine repairs/maintenance, deferred maintenance projects, and supporting RPD operational activities and events. Routine repairs and maintenance are performed daily to secure the safety and guarantee the operations of our facilities.

Deferred maintenance includes capital-funded projects and philanthropy projects initiated through funding provided by donors for park improvements. The Structural Maintenance Yard includes 9 shops/15 trades and 104 employees who maintain recreation facilities citywide, completing about 15,000 work orders per year — roughly 300 each week. This equals about 144 work orders per FTE annually, placing SMY above productivity benchmarks for large municipal park systems.

Under the direction of the Superintendent of Structural Maintenance, this position is responsible for managing the day-to-day functions of nine (9) shops, fifteen (15) trades, including co-managing with the Superintendent supervision of all shop supervisors engaged in the repair, maintenance and construction of park infrastructure and grounds. The essential duties for this position include, but are not limited to:

• Directs, assigns, reviews and approves the work of subordinate craft personnel engaged in the repair, maintenance and construction of park infrastructure, equipment, vehicles, apparatus, fencing, foundations and complements (e.g. painting, fountains, curbing, etc.) necessary to successfully execute related projects.
