Salary Range

Salary Range $67,100 - $81,791 Annual Salary (Range 75: Classified Salary Schedule Fiscal Year ). Starting placement is generally at Step 1.

Benefits Summary

In addition to the salary, this position qualifies for the choice of one of the District’s health benefits and welfare plans, fully paid by the District for employee and eligible dependents, and a health plan costing an estimated $60,000 for the district for fiscal year . Two medical plans (Anthem Blue Cross PPO and Kaiser Permanente HMO); dental (Delta Dental PPO);

vision (VSP Choice); life insurance (employee and for eligible dependents – The Lincoln); long‑term disability/income protection plan (The Lincoln); employee assistance plan (Anthem EAP).

District contributes an additional 26.81% of the employee’s salary to CalPERS pension.

Employees may elect to participate in optional plans including additional life insurance, medical, transportation, and/or dependent care Flexible Spending Accounts, and pre‑taxed dollars for 403(b) or 457 pension plans.

Classified employees earn 10 to 22 days vacation per year (based on years of service) and up to 12 sick leave days (pro‑rated for less than full‑time positions). There are 20 paid holidays.

Position Description Position Summary

The Lead Custodian reports to the Custodial Supervisor at San Jose City College.

Work schedule:

12 months per year;
Monday – Thursday, 8:00 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.;
Friday, 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

This position is represented by the California School Employees Association (CSEA), Chapter 363.

Position Purpose

Reporting to a Custodial Supervisor or assigned administrator, the Lead Custodian oversees a group of custodians performing routine and specialized cleaning tasks, and performs special and emergency assignments as needed.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Assumes responsibility for custodial crews in the supervisor’s absence, develops daily schedules, trains staff, provides supplies, solves problems, and may work on a revolving crew or be assigned individually. Oversight of temporary staff and crews across shifts and locations.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform full range of functions assigned to Custodian I and II.
  • Assist supervisor with daily operations: safety inspections, managing surplus property, coordinating special events/work orders, vendor communication, equipment set‑up and tear‑down for special projects.
  • Operate, maintain, and service specialized equipment such as suction vacuums, sweepers, floor buffers, strippers, auto scrubbers; install switches, brushes, electrical cords, etc.
  • Employ correct handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous substances; implement safety precautions with toxic materials; assist in staff training on protective gear.
  • Prepare campus facilities for daily operations (opening gates, building access) ensuring safety and operability.
  • Respond to immediate safety/operational concerns: facility damage, alarms, graffiti, etc., resolving them promptly.
  • Secure facilities and grounds to minimize property damage, equipment loss, and liability.
  • Operate manual sprayers for insecticides inside buildings.
  • Operate District vehicles: flatbed truck, manual transmission van, station wagon, dump truck, gas and electric forklifts.
  • Test new products and equipment; report results orally or in writing.
  • Use cleaning products, chemicals, floor finishes, stripers, insecticides, and pesticides.
  • Maintain portable radio or cell phone; be on‑call for custodial duties across campus.
  • Observe and report vandalism, illegal entry, or fire hazards.
  • Assist in compiling District property inventories.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate and prioritize daily work of custodians; ensure timely completion per instructions; communicate issues to supervisor.
  • Contact and assign substitute employees or re‑assign staff to cover work areas as needed.
  • Respond to emergency custodial needs, furniture/equipment setups, and coordinate special work.
  • Lead direction to ensure cleaning, detailed work, and projects are completed on schedule; inspect and review group work.
  • Order supplies for special events/projects and ensure custodians start the workday equipped.
