2nd Shift Custodian (868) – Serving Schools
Position SummaryA Custodian is responsible for a variety of tasks including washing, mopping, scrubbing, dusting, sweeping, moving, event setup/cleanup, and snow removal. Performs routine and deep cleaning, along with basic maintenance procedures to ensure a high standard of safety, cleanliness, efficiency, and customer service for the Sanford School Department.
Minimum Requirements- Previous custodial experience preferred
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Current Maine CHRC (fingerprinting) or ability to obtain
- Citizenship, residency, or work visa required
- Pass a criminal background check and pre‑employment physical
- Ability to work alone or as part of a team
- Ability to climb and work from a ladder
- Ability to perform snow removal
- Flexibility to meet the needs of the district (hours, locations, duties, etc.)
- Physical ability to work on feet for 7+ hours a day and lift up to 50lbs
- Dependable, honest, enthusiastic, approachable, detail‑oriented, self‑directed, and able to communicate effectively
- Perform routine custodial duties: dusting, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning restrooms, and restocking supplies
- Perform deep‑cleaning duties: carpet cleaning, floor stripping and refinishing, furniture, walls, lights, and windows
- Perform routine maintenance on custodial equipment and supplies
- Empty trash receptacles, dispose trash into dumpsters
- Ensure all doors and windows are locked after cleaning areas
- Report needs and concerns to head custodians
- Promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices
- Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of custodial equipment and supplies
- Assist in on‑the‑job training of new staff on routine procedures
- Perform cleaning functions specific to the assigned facilities or based on seasonal/project requirements
- Assist with setting up, breaking down, and cleaning up building activities as needed
- Perform snow shoveling, snow blowing, and treatment of sidewalks and entryways with salt, sand, or ice melt
- Perform light maintenance: replace light bulbs, adjust furniture, or other similar activities
- Perform miscellaneous job‑related duties as assigned
- Ability to understand and follow multi‑step verbal and written instructions
- Ability to read, understand, and follow safety procedures
- Ability to safely use district‑provided custodial equipment and supplies
- Ability to use hand and power tools associated with custodial work
- Work on feet for 7+ hours a day and maintain an average walking pace
- Perform moderate lifting or carrying up to 25‑50 lbs.
- Work in dusty, dirty, or dirty environments with regular exposure to cleaning chemicals and weather conditions
- Maintain required vision and hearing to perform custodial duties in low lighting and noisy conditions
