Custodian Position
A Custodian is responsible for a variety of tasks including washing, mopping, scrubbing, dusting, sweeping, moving, event setup/cleanup, and snow removal. Performs routine, detail, and deep cleaning along with basic maintenance procedures to ensure a high standard of safety, cleanliness, efficiency, and customer service for the Sanford School Department. Hours are Monday through Friday 3PM to 11PM. Must be able to switch to day shift during the summer and school vacations/breaks.
Pay Range: $21.10-$24.51/hour.
Minimum Requirements:
- Previous custodial experience preferred
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Current Maine CHRC (fingerprinting) or ability to obtain
- Citizenship, residency, or work visa required
- Pass a criminal background check and pre-employment physical
- Ability to work alone or as part of a team
- Ability to climb and work from a ladder
- Ability to perform snow removal
- Flexibility to meet the needs of the district (i.e. hours, locations, duties, etc.)
- Physical abilities - able to work on your feet for 7+ hours a day and lift up to 50lbs
- Personal qualities - dependable, honest, enthusiastic, approachable
- Professional qualities - detail-oriented, self-directed and able to communicate effectively
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs routine custodial duties; dusting, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning restrooms, and restocking supplies
- Performs deep cleaning duties; carpet cleaning, floor stripping and refinishing, furniture, walls, lights, and windows
- Performs routine maintenance to custodial equipment and supplies
- Empties trash receptacles, disposes trash into dumpsters
- Ensures all doors and windows are locked after cleaning areas
- Reports needs and concerns to head custodians
- Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices
- Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of custodial equipment and supplies
- Assists in on-the-job training of new staff on routine procedures
- Performs cleaning functions specific to the assigned facilities and/or based on seasonal/project requirements
- Performs task associated with setting up, breaking down and cleaning up of building activities as needed
- Performs snow shoveling, snow blowing and treatment of sidewalks and entryways with salt, sand or ice melt
- Performs lite maintenance, such as replacing light bulbs, adjusting furniture, or other similar activities
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Required:
- Ability to understand and follow multi-step verbal and written instructions
- Ability to read, understand, follow, and safety procedures
- Ability to safely use district provided custodial equipment and supplies
- Ability to use hand and power tools associated with custodial work
Physical Abilities:
- Vision:
Ability required to perform custodial duties. You may be required to work in areas with low lighting. - Hearing:
Ability to tolerate exposure to noisy conditions. - Speech:
Ability to be understood in face-to-face communications, to speak with a level of proficiency and volume to be understood over a two-way radio or telephone. - Body Mobility:
Ability work on your feet and maintain average walking pace for 7+ hours a day, repeated reaching by extending hand(s) and/or arm(s) in any direction, climb and work from ladders. Using equipment requiring high dexterity. Requires feeling to perceive object size, shape, temperature or texture by means of senses in your skin. - Strength:
Moderate lifting or carrying up to 25-50 lbs. or less on a regular basis
Environmental Requirements:
- Ability to work in dusty or dirty environment. Regular exposure to moving machinery and/or vehicles. Work with regular exposure to odors and cleaning chemicals. Regular exposure to weather including heat, cold, precipitation, dampness and humidity
Other Requirements:
- Ability to understand and follow multi-step verbal and written instructions
- Ability to adjust your daily cleaning routine based on building activities or weather condition
- Ability to learn and apply safety procedures and standards
