Maintenance Technician

Reports To: Director of Facilities / Facilities Operations Manager

Job Type: Full-Time

Schedule
:
Generally, 1:00 PM–9:00 PM during the school year; 6:00 AM–2:00 PM during summer and school vacations. Schedule may vary for events, emergencies, or seasonal needs.

Pay Range
: $20.00-$23.92/hour

Position Summary The School Maintenance Technician is responsible for the general upkeep, repair, and safety of the school buildings, grounds, vehicles, and equipment. This role ensures a clean, safe, and functional environment for students, staff, and visitors. This position requires you to perform routine maintenance and respond to repair needs across a variety of building's, grounds, and fleet/equipment systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine inspections, repairs and preventive maintenance on HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems
  • Complete facilities repairs (drywall, painting, flooring, doors, locks, windows, furniture)
  • Respond promptly to maintenance work orders and emergency repair requests
  • Perform basic plumbing repairs (leaky faucets, clogged drains, toilet repairs)
  • Assist with seasonal building and equipment preparations
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, fire code, and district safety regulations
  • Safely operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and light machinery
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies as needed (alarms, weather events, facility failures, etc.)
  • Support custodial staff as needed during peak periods or absences
Grounds Care Responsibilities
  • Mow, trim, and edge lawns; maintain athletic fields, playgrounds, and green spaces
  • Water and maintain landscaping beds, trees, and shrubs; perform seasonal planting and pruning
  • Maintain walkways, parking lots, and drives — including sweeping, litter/debris removal, and pothole repair/reporting
  • Perform snow and ice removal from sidewalks, entrances, and parking areas; apply salt/ice melt as needed
  • Maintain outdoor drainage systems and irrigation systems; identify and repair leaks or clogs
  • Inspect and maintain fencing, gates, signage, and outdoor lighting
  • Maintain playground equipment and surfacing; report safety hazards immediately
  • Keep dumpster areas, outdoor storage, and grounds equipment sheds clean and organized
Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance Responsibilities
  • Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on district vehicles (buses, trucks, vans, carts) per manufacturer and district schedules
  • Perform general vehicle maintenance, including fluid checks/changes, belts, hoses, battery checks, brake inspections, and tire pressure/tread checks (within scope of certification/training)
  • Maintain, service, and repair grounds equipment (mowers, blowers, trimmers, snow plows/blowers, tractors)
  • Maintain, service, and repair small engines and powered hand tools
  • Maintain and repair custodial equipment (floor scrubbers, buffers, vacuums, carpet extractors, pressure washers)
  • Track and schedule vehicle inspections, and required servicing; maintain maintenance logs
  • Coordinate with outside vendors/mechanics for repairs beyond in-house capability or certification
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop/garage area, including proper storage of fuels, oils, and chemicals
  • Order and maintain inventory of parts, supplies, and equipment as needed
  • Ensure all vehicles and equipment meet safety and compliance standards prior to use
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • 2+ years of experience in building maintenance, facilities, or a related trade preferred
  • Working knowledge of basic electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and HVAC systems
  • Experience with groundskeeping/landscaping equipment preferred
