Position: As-Needed Temporary Employee (Annual Clean Up Campaign 2026)

the department

the city of santa clara is looking to fill multiple as-needed-temporary employee positions to support the annual cleanup campaign. Successful incumbents will be assigned to work as ground crews shoving, sweeping, and lifting up to 50 lbs of debris left by santa clara residents.

the position

in this temporary employment opportunity, you will gain valuable experience working with the public and demonstrate teamwork amongst your peers as you become part of a dedicated crew.

a mandatory paid orientation is tentatively scheduled for april, 2026
, where employees will receive training, safety boots, and the necessary equipment to perform the job.
this position will work from 6:45am-4:15pm, 40-45 hours a week, monday-friday between april 27, 2026 - may 22, 2026.

as an as-needed employee, this is an at-will position and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired calpers annuitants.

the hourly rate for this position is $34.87.

duties

under immediate supervision:

  • operates a class c license vehicle, hauling personnel, materials, and equipment to and from various work sites;
  • loads and unloads trash and assists in the work required to maintain the cleanliness of the city;
  • represents the city in contacts with property owner, answering questions pertaining to city services;
  • assists in setting up and staffing traffic safety work zones;
  • refers complaints to superior;
  • maintains daily records of activities; and
  • performs other related duties as assigned.

possession of a valid class c california driver's license is required at time of appointment and for duration of employment.

desirable qualifications

recent experience in construction; grounds, landscape, street, water/sewer, or building maintenance; and/or as a member of a traffic field crew.

  • may be required to work odd and unusual hours in the performance of duties and in emergency situations.
  • must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job assignment.
  • a department of justice (doj) & fbi fingerprinting will be required prior to appointment.
  • dmv record: you are required to obtain a driving record report from the dmv, either in person or online, called a driver’s license information record.
