Substitute Custodian

Minimum Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED
• A valid New Mexico driver’s license appropriate for operating vehicles of the size required for this position.
• One year custodial experience.

• Operations, services and activities of a custodial program.
• Modern institutional cleaning methods, materials, safe work practices and equipment.
• Methods and techniques of cleaning and preserving floors, furniture, walls and fixtures.
• Operational characteristics of cleaning equipment and materials.
• Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.
• Health and safety regulations.

• Good organizational ability; good written and oral communication skills; ability to maintain high level of professionalism and confidentiality regarding students, staff, parents, and school matters. Ability to work with co-workers, students, staff and maintain a positive attitude.

• Works cooperatively with colleagues, supervisors, and administrators.

• Performs general custodial duties to clean assigned area; clean, sanitize and maintain assigned buildings, classrooms, offices and restroom facilities.
• Cleans and disinfects lavatories, toilets and other plumbing fixtures; refills paper and other dispensers.
• Orders, stocks, and maintains adequate levels of supplies in buildings.
• Cleans chalkboards, washes windows, dusts, waxes and polishes furniture and woodwork.
• Replaces and installs light bulbs in interior building as needed.
• Raises and lowers flags on school days.
• Empties, cleans, and sanitizes waste containers.
• Maintains security of assigned area; ensures doors and gates are locked when work is completed; inspects for vandalism; confers with security personnel and higher level staff as necessary.
• Operates custodial equipment, materials and supplies in a safe and effective manner.
• Carries out assignments and instructions from supervisor in a competent and efficient manner.
• Maintains buildings and grounds in such a manner they are clean and free of trash and debris.
• Wears protective back belts whenever lifting or doing strenuous work.
• Assumes responsibility for building security ensuring windows are locked windows and doors are secured.
• Performs emergency minor repair and cleaning as necessary.
• Maintains a safe environment for staff and students.
• Wears protective wear as directed when cleaning up body fluids.
• Responds to the needs of the principal and staff of the building.
• Assists in the preparation of rooms and facilities for special events, activities and meetings; move, arrange, and set up items and equipment.
• Sweep, mop, wax and buff floors; vacuum and shampoo rugs and carpets; operate equipment such as floor buffers and vacuum cleaners.
• Performs snow removal duties from school entrances. Shovels snow in designated areas.
• Prepares and mixes a variety of cleaning disinfectants and other materials. Uses all chemicals as directed by container labels.
• Reports any maintenance problems to Principal, Building Administrator and Maintenance Supervisor.
• Follows all safety rules and procedures established for work area.
• Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
• Lifts and moves materials, furniture, equipment and supplies.
• Maintains equipment, tools and custodial closets in an operable, safe and organized status.
• Accounts for supplies, materials, and equipment as required.
• Completes records and reports as required in a timely manner.
• Uses safety in such instances as: spills, ice removal, removal of obstacles, removal of broken debris, etc. Such issues that are deemed hazardous and that could cause harm must be taken care immediately.
