Merrill Gardens at Santa Maria is currently accepting applications for Maintenance Assistant to help support residents within our beautiful community residents call home.
Position SummaryConsistent with the company’s mission, the Maintenance Assistant will support residents by maintaining the physical environment and ensuring safety and quality of the community’s facilities. Responsibilities include general maintenance, repairs, safety compliance, and assistance with vehicle upkeep.

- Perform general maintenance projects as scheduled or assigned, including installations and repairs involving plumbing and electrical equipment, fire and sprinkler equipment, H.V.A.C., landscape, carpentry work, painting, and equipment repair.
- Understand and apply Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
- Maintain and repair walls, floor coverings, doors, windows, furniture, and woodwork in common areas.
- Have basic prep and painting abilities.
- Repair and maintain vacated rooms in a timely manner, including painting walls and cleaning carpets.
- Handle in-house plumbing (sinks, toilets, bathtubs).
- Perform minor electrical work within units and common areas (light switches, wall outlets, garbage disposals).
- Paint apartments and common areas.
- Repair, clean and maintain all carpet, floor coverings and furniture.
- Complete work orders in a timely manner and note any other work completed.
- Document safety issues and physical plan deficiencies per local, county, state and federal guidelines.
- Assist with preventative maintenance and cleaning of community vehicles (buses, cars, vans).
- Assist with safety procedures and hazard communications training.
- Perform other duties as assigned by maintenance supervisors or general manager.
- Respond immediately and appropriately to accidents and emergencies per established protocol.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred; must be at least 18 years of age.
- 1–3 years related experience or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of building maintenance, electrical, mechanical, painting, plumbing, floor care, heating and HVAC skills.
- Preferred knowledge of fire suppression & irrigation systems.
- Preferred motor vehicle maintenance ability.
- Flexible and must be able to work evenings and weekends as necessary.
This role involves frequent standing, walking, lifting (up to 90 lbs), pushing/pulling, and other physical activities. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Actual pay rate within stated pay range is determined based on relevant factors in compliance with state and local wage laws. This range reflects what we reasonably expect to pay upon hire.
