Position OverviewThe Soo Project Office Maintenance and Repair Section maintains a large facility in support of our nation’s navigation on the St. Marys River. The duties for this position include work as a member of a general maintenance and repair crew. Duties will include chipping and breaking of concrete, erecting forms, placing and finishing concrete. Performing routine carpentry work by measuring and cutting lumber to proper dimensions.
Removal and replacement of damaged hardwood fenders weighing 500 lb. utilizing multiple hand tools. Duties will also include painting of buildings, equipment and structures. Performs duties including loading and unloading pipe, rebar, fender timbers, building materials etc., by hand or operating forklifts. Assists higher‑graded mechanic in the maintenance and repair of lock equipment. May drive vehicles and large equipment. The candidate will be required to work outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions and indoor areas that may be dusty, oily, drafty and noisy.
Position requires working for extended periods in small compartments, passageways and recesses below ground level. Employee works on scaffolding or from heights.
This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoW, Section 9905 to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
QualificationsIn order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience;
if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.
- Knowledge of operating machinery and equipment.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to work safely with hand tools, heavy tools and large equipment.

Conditions of EmploymentThis position is covered by the Civilian Drug Abuse Testing Program. Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019‑R “Condition of Employment” for Certain Civilian Positions Identified as Critical under the Drug Abuse Testing Program. Must possess a valid state Motor Vehicle Driver’s License, and be eligible to obtain a commercial driver’s license. Must pass a pre‑employment physical; heavy physical lifting is required.
Incumbent must be able to lift objects weighing up to and including 50 lb.
