Job Description

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
This position is responsible for ensuring the appearance and operational integrity of all school and facility grounds. The Groundsman oversees the maintenance of equipment and materials and monitors inventory levels of consumable supplies.

Director of Facility Operations

REQUIREMENTS:

Education Level:

  • A GED or a standard high school diploma from a GaDOE-approved and accredited institution.
  • Minimum of two yeas’ experience.

Preferred:

  • Five years of commercial and residential grounds maintenance experience.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements

Required:

  • Valid driver’s license for operation of district vehicles.

Experience, Skill, and Certification:

  • Must possess or be able to acquire skills and techniques necessary for grounds maintenance.
  • Proficiency in weed trimming, hedging, edging, and blowing.
  • Ability to operate zero-turn mowers.
  • Skilled in tree pruning and removal, as well as ditch grading for proper drainage.
  • Capable of operating all required equipment for grounds maintenance.
  • Ensures proper upkeep of worksites, maintaining cleanliness and safety.
  • Able to receive and follow instructions and communicate clearly with colleagues.

Materials and Equipment Operating Knowledge:

  • Ability to read and comply with all labels, safety warnings, and guidelines.
  • Strong attention to detail and consistent vigilance for safety.
  • Proficient in use and operation of personal computers and peripherals.
  • Experienced in operating electrical and gas lifts of various sizes.

  • Proficient use of the School Dude work order system.
  • Ability to verify completion of assigned tasks and close out work orders appropriately.
  • Effective collaboration with external vendors, engineers, contractors, and consultants on landscaping projects across district grounds.
  • Delivers excellent customer service to foster safe and comfortable environments conducive to study, teaching, and learning across all SCCPSS facilities.
  • Conducts regular inspections to identify issues on the grounds, such as erosion, flooding, or hazardous trees.
  • Maintains comprehensive inventory control of all grounds maintenance tools.
  • Ensures tools are appropriate, clean, sharpened, in operational condition, and stored safely.
  • Maintains a secure and hazard-free work area, free from students, faculty, and objects that could pose or sustain damage.
  • Utilizes safety equipment correctly to prevent injury or fatality.
  • Prepares sites by removing hazardous objects, grading, leveling, and clearing debris prior to commencing work.
  • Responsible for identifying, estimating, and prioritizing grounds-related improvements for district properties.
  • Manages multiple priorities efficiently, including responding to frequent interruptions and diffusing challenging situations.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in personal computing and keyboarding.
  • Responds to emergency calls and works overtime as necessary.
  • Promotes and adheres to all Board of Public Education policies and departmental procedures.
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with individuals from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.
  • Ensures all grounds equipment is cleaned, inspected, and secured after each use, including gas-powered tools, hand tools, riding equipment, and vehicles.
  • Diagnoses and resolves equipment malfunctions, coordinating with manufacturers or representatives for replacement parts as needed.
