Job Description

Job Summary: The Certified School Nurse provides comprehensive health services to students, ensuring their well-being and academic success. This includes assessing health needs, providing emergency care, administering medication, and developing individualized care plans. The nurse collaborates with families, staff, and medical providers to address health concerns, coordinates screenings, and contributes to the child study team.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Ethical and professional standards as set forth by the Illinois Nurse Practice Act and ANA Nurse Scope of Practice
  • Assess and evaluate the health care needs of students.
  • Provide emergency medical care for illness and injury.
  • Administer medication as prescribed, and monitor effectiveness.
  • Serve as a liaison between school and home by communicating with parents/guardians regarding student health and safety needs.
  • Develop and implement individualized care plans for students with health conditions in collaboration with families and medical providers, and provide appropriate training.
  • Provide school staff with current information about student health concerns and care on a confidential need to know basis.
  • Assist students and families in accessing health care by sharing appropriate community resources.
  • Coordinate and supervise vision and hearing screenings and make all referrals and follow up on these referrals.
  • Collaborate and support teachers with health related curriculum.
  • Maintain accurate student health records and complete service logs and Medicaid billing.
  • Stay current on best practices in school nursing through continuing education.
  • Mentor and supervise student nurses.
  • Participate as coordinator for the emergency cardiac response team for the assigned building. (
    * new requirement in Jan 2025)
  • Support the development of 504 plans in collaboration with the school psychologist and families for students who require accommodations based on identified health concerns.
  • Serve as an active, contributing member of the child study team, identifying, evaluating and providing for students receiving special education services.
  • Complete and present health histories as part of case study evaluations.
  • Complete written health components of the Individual Education Plan (IEP) for students.
  • Maintain open communication with the IEP team, including administrators and parents/guardians, to create a collaborative environment where students' health and safety needs are effectively met.
  • Meet federal and state timelines and mandates as well as local policies in performance of their duties. Activities may include Individualized Education Program (IEP) development, Medicaid billing, report writing, service logs, and treatment plan development.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by building or district administration.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Illinois Professional Educator License with School Nurse endorsement
  • Bachelor's Degree including Public Health
Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to handle or feel materials. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Salary

Salary: $48,856 Per Year (SEA salary schedule Benefit Information)
