The Engineering Technician / Construction Inspector plays a vital role in supporting the successful delivery of transportation and infrastructure projects. This position is responsible for performing on-site construction inspections, documenting daily activities, and ensuring work complies with contract plans, specifications, and applicable agency standards.
Working under the direction of the Resident Engineer, the Engineering Technician serves as the eyes and ears in the field—helping maintain quality, safety, and compliance throughout all phases of construction.
Key Responsibilities:- Conduct field inspections of construction activities to ensure compliance with contract specifications, design plans, and regulatory standards.
- Perform material testing, including asphalt, concrete, and soil, to verify adherence to project requirements.
- Document daily construction activities, including site conditions, work progress, and any deviations from the plans.
- Communicate findings and concerns to the Resident Engineer and project management team.
- Monitor contractor performance to ensure adherence to safety protocols and quality control standards.
- Prepare inspection reports and maintain organized records of testing results and field observations.
- Collaborate with contractors, engineers, and other stakeholders to address and resolve any on-site issues.
- Ensure proper implementation of environmental, safety, and traffic control measures.
- High school diploma or equivalent (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management preferred).
- 1-3 years of experience in construction inspection or a related field.
- Familiarity with construction materials, methods, and practices, including experience in field testing.
- Knowledge of safety regulations, quality control standards, and relevant construction codes.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn construction management software.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work independently.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for travel to project sites.
- Ability to sit, stand, climb, bend, twist, or stoop frequently and for extended periods.
- Ability to work outdoors under varying weather and site conditions.
- Ability to reach horizontally and vertically as required.
- Ability to safely use construction and inspection safety equipment.
Certifications:
- IDOT Documentation of Contract Quantities Certification.
- ACI Certification (Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I).
