Overview
REPORTS TO: Building Principal & Director of Multilingual Education or Designees
LOCATION: District-Wide Buildings
JOB SUMMARY: Performed functions to support students whose first language is something other than English. The ESL Specialist works collaboratively with all stakeholders and ensures English Learners continue to develop English Language proficiency through speaking, listening, reading and writing. The ESL Specialist also provides instructional support, professional learning, and coaching to promote effective English Language Development practices across classrooms and grade levels.
EssentialFunctions
- Create and support a classroom environment that is respectful of students' cultural and linguistic diversity, conducive to learning, and appropriate to the developmental levels and interests of the students.
- Adapt and implement lessons and curriculum to meet individual students' linguistic development stages and needs, and varying levels of English language proficiency, to promote the learning of academic and social English.
- Conduct screenings to determine student eligibility for ELL Education services and programs. Administer standardized assessments, in coordination with the central office, to measure progress in the acquisition of English language skills of EL students. Review and interpret scores.
- Deliver lessons in a variety of learning environments, including small groups and individuals, inside and outside of the students' regular general education classroom.
- Review student progress via assessments, maintain records of student work, and develop intervention strategies to ensure student success and growth.
- Communicate verbally and in writing regularly with parents and students on progress.
- Maintain accurate and current records required by state and federal requirements.
- Collaborate with other staff in planning, modifying, enhancing and implementing curriculum, school and district goals and objectives.
- Enforce and support District and School policies, philosophies and objectives with students and parents.
- Plan, design, and deliver ongoing professional development aligned to district goals, instructional priorities, and the needs of multilingual learners.
- Model effective instructional strategies and language supports in classrooms to demonstrate high-impact practices for teachers.
- Provide side-by-side coaching, lesson modeling, and co-teaching to build teacher capacity in implementing research-based EL strategies.
- Support teachers in setting goals for English language development of students. Facilitate collaborative planning sessions focused on data-driven instruction, language development, and culturally responsive teaching.
- Support teachers in aligning instruction with WIDA Standards, district curriculum, and best practices for ESL instruction.
- Participate and facilitate staff development, school-improvement activities to support the English Language Development of students (before or after school).
- Other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
- Appropriate Illinois Professional Educator License for teaching; with endorsement/approval in English as a Second Language (ESL). Bilingual endorsement (preferred)
EXPERIENCE
- Experience working with ELs in a classroom setting is preferred.
- Bilingual Spanish preferred
Work is performed within the school/district environment where unusual temperature, noise, and hazards are relatively nonexistent. Work requires the employee to perform the following critical physical demands of the job in the school or district office setting as applicable:
- Ability to regularly communicate verbally, see, and hear.
- Ability to pull, push, ambulate, perform tasks from standing and seated positions, and use fine motor manipulation during the normal performance of tasks and responsibilities.
- Ability to occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
- Ability to travel from building to building and local community as needed.
Terms of employment and salary are in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement between the Valley View School District Board of Education and the Valley View Council, AFT Local 604.
EvaluationPerformance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement between the Valley View Council and the Board of Education.
Pay Scale And Benefit DisclosureSalary is in accordance with the teacher salary schedule.
