Senior Mechanical Engineer, New Product Development

✈️ Relocation assistance available

Company Overview

Our client is a privately-owned, billion-dollar power distribution equipment manufacturer with over a century of engineering innovation. Profits get reinvested into R&D and employees rather than funneled to public shareholders.

  • Data center demand is driving explosive growth, with the company on track to double revenue within 5 years (in addition to healthy business from utilities and renewables)
  • Strong margins, healthy balance sheet, and 3.5% of profits reinvested into R&D annually
  • Family-owned business culture backed by action: extended holiday shutdowns, regular town halls with senior leadership, and a track record of taking care of employees when it counts
  • Full-scale, in-house testing labs (500kV AC withstand, 1300kV lightning impulse, environmental chambers to
-70°C). Rapidly validate designs on-site instead of waiting months for third-party labs.

This is a company where engineering decisions are driven by product excellence and long-term thinking.

The Role

As a Sr. NPD Engineer, you'll own the mechanical design and development of medium and high-voltage power distribution equipment from concept through production. This is full-lifecycle product development: concept, prototyping, testing, validation, supplier vetting, and DFM.

You'll work with in a Stage-Gate NPD process alongside electrical engineers, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain. The team is growing due to sustained demand, and there's real opportunity to take ownership of increasingly complex projects.

What you'll own:

  • Mechanical design of switch gear and power distribution equipment (mechanisms, enclosures, structural components)
  • Full product lifecycle from concept through prototype, testing, validation, and production release
  • FEA and thermal analysis to validate designs before prototyping
  • DFM across casting, machining, molding, stamping, and forming processes
  • Test plan creation and hands-on prototype testing in their in-house high-voltage lab
  • Tolerance stack-up analysis and GD&T for production-ready designs
  • DFMEA and DOE to drive design decisions
  • Supplier interface for component selection and qualification
  • Engineering support to Sales, Marketing, and Manufacturing on new and existing products

What the team builds:

  • Medium and high-voltage switch gear enclosures and assemblies
  • Reclosers and overhead switches (stored-energy mechanisms, actuated systems)
  • Current limiting system protection housings
  • High-accuracy sensor enclosures and mounting systems
  • Products serving utilities, commercial, industrial, and data center markets

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (required)
  • 5+ years of progressive mechanical design experience in electromechanical or high-voltage product development
  • Strong fundamentals in mechanism design, linkages, springs, statics, dynamics, and material properties
  • Proficiency with 3D parametric modeling (ProE/Creo preferred) and FEA tools
  • Hands-on experience with DFM across multiple manufacturing methods (casting, machining, molding, stamping, forming)
  • GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis
  • DFMEA and DOE experience
  • Familiarity with IEEE and industry standards for power distribution equipment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Ideal backgrounds include:

  • Product development at large power distribution OEMs, MV drives OEMs, or HV transformer or electromechanical OEMs
  • Any mechanically complex, high-voltage product environment with real R&D function
  • This role is not a fit for those with only retrofit or engineer-to-order work without product development experience.

Why Join:

  • Own full product life cycles at a company that invests significantly in R&D
  • Industry-leading in-house testing facilities to iterate on designs faster than the competition
  • Private ownership means long-term thinking and genuine investment in products and people
  • Strong total compensation: competitive base + quarterly bonus + annual profit sharing
  • Century-old company with a billion in revenue, positioned to ride the data center and electrification wave
  • Clean, climate-controlled facility with advanced prototyping and testing capabilities
