Position: Registered Nurse OR

Job Type: Full‑time

Shift: 4 days per week / 10 hours per shift

Responsibilities & Duties
  • Assess patient and family needs to provide quality care to assigned patients.
  • Organize time, equipment, supplies, and personnel for effective case management.
  • Consider cost containment by using supplies economically and ensuring effective turnover.
  • Prepare the operating room according to patient/procedure requirements.
  • Implement the plan of care safely and effectively, ensuring a safe environment: including positioning patients, padding bony prominences, and protecting respiratory and circulatory functions.
  • Ensure correct prep and draping procedures.
  • Conduct the "time out" process before incision to confirm correct patient, procedure, and surgical site.
  • Maintain asepsis during all procedures, opening and presenting sterile items aseptically and ensuring supplies are not expired.
  • Account for all sponges, needles, sharps during and after procedures and document appropriately.
  • Promote positive communication with all team members.
  • Anticipate needs of the surgical team and assist anesthesia personnel by supporting the patient during anesthesia administration.
  • Maintain current knowledge, certification, and licensure; pursue growth and development.
  • Act as a role model for current and new staff.
  • Demonstrate a professional manner.
  • Attend all required safety training programs and describe responsibilities related to general safety and job‑related hazards.
  • Follow center exposure control plans for blood‑borne and airborne pathogens.
  • Assume other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions

The work environment includes occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, electrical shock, and vibration. Medical facilities must be kept very clean, with excellent hygiene to protect patients from infection. The employee may be exposed to infectious diseases at Category 1 risk and receives training in hand-washing practices and Universal Precautions, with access to personal protective equipment when direct exposure is anticipated.

The environment involves moderate noise levels, interruptions, and odors.

Equipment Used

All operating room instrumentation, video equipment, power equipment, laser and smoke evacuators, microscopes, OR beds, sterilization equipment, clinical equipment for patient care (including suction equipment, stretchers, blankets, fluid warmers), and office equipment (computers, printers, copy machines, telephones, public address system, fax machine).

Supervisory Responsibilities

Requirements
  • Current Illinois license as a Registered Nurse.
  • Minimum of 2 years orthopedic (or OR) nursing experience.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications.
  • Preferred: PALS certification, Bachelor’s degree, ASC experience, specialty certification in a related area.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations; write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; present information to managers, clients, physicians, and the public.
  • Mathematical skills: work with probability, statistics, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
  • Computer skills: proficient with MS Word, email communication, and scheduling software.
  • Reasoning ability: define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Flexibility to work variable hours to meet the center’s daily surgery schedule.
  • Physical demands: regularly lift/move up to 50 pounds; lift patients, assist when falling, carry heavy medical equipment; stand, walk, use hands, reach, stoop, kneel, or crouch frequently; require close, peripheral, and depth vision and ability to adjust focus.
Salary

$35 – $50 per hour, depending on experience.
