Overview

The Licensed Plumber will be a part of the construction crew to install water mains, service lines, and meters. The Licensed Plumber will ensure installations meet Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and EPA standards, particularly under lead service line regulations and public health codes. Responsibilities include but are not limited to installing and maintaining water mains, valves, hydrants, service lines and meters, setting new meters, fixing leaks, operating and maintaining equipment, assist with responding to customer service work orders concerning existing accounts, maintaining a positive attitude while dealing with customers and JULIE locates.

  • Pay: $22.00 - $34.00 per hour based on qualifications

Licensing and Certification
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Valid Illinois Journeyman or Master Plumber license in good standing.
  • Minimum 4–6 years of plumbing experience—especially with trenching, water main installation, backflow assemblies, and service lines.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate utility vehicles, CDL preferred.
  • Certification in IDPH-approved continuing education or EPA Cross-Connection Control/backflow prevention, preferred but not required.
  • Prior experience in community or municipal water distribution or cooperative environments, preferred but not required.
  • OSHA 10 or 30-hour Safety certification, preferred but not required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Install, test, and maintain water mains, service lines, meters, valve boxes, and backflow prevention devices in compliance with federal/state regulations.
  • Read and interpret design drawings, construction plans, and specifications for water distribution systems.
  • Perform pressure and leak testing on piping systems and fixtures.
  • Execute lead service line replacements according to IDPH/EPA (LSLRNA) requirements, including notification, flushing, tap sampling, and using approved materials.
  • Ensure horizontal/vertical separation from sanitary sewers per Illinois Plumbing Code
  • Maintain documentation: installation logs, testing records, service line inventories, and compliance reports.
  • Collaborate with crew, engineers, contractors, and public officials to coordinate project workflows.
  • Adhere to safety standards and IDPH plumbing regulations (225

    320), staying current on continuing education/licensing.
  • Proven experience with lead service line replacement and IDPH/EPA compliance (LSLRNA).
  • Strong understanding of IDPH plumbing code (225

  • Ability to read blueprints and tape measure accurately and perform pressure testing.
  • Excellent communication skills for customer-facing situations and crew coordination.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varied conditions and lifting up to 50 lbs.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting heavy materials.
  • Use of trenching equipment, backhoes, shoring systems, and PPE.
  • Exposure to dirt, water, and construction environments.
  • Must be able to perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods.
