ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Monterey is seeking a full‑time Facility Attendant at the Monterey Conference Center. This position requires the ability to perform a variety of work in banquet and conference set‑ups and custodial maintenance, and to do related work as required. The candidate must be available to work a varied schedule, including extensive holiday, night, and weekend work.

SUMMARY

Under supervision, the Facility Attendant will perform a variety of work in the operation and custodial maintenance of the Conference Center, Sports Center, Library, Recreation Centers, or Harbor facilities and equipment, including group and event servicing and setup duties; and perform related tasks as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Perform service tasks for conferences, programs and events in progress or upcoming.
  • Respond to requests from facility users, members of the public and staff.
  • Perform and/or assist with building security functions.
  • Arrange furniture and gym equipment for events.
  • Set up and/or assist with stage lights, public address and sound systems, exhibits, booths and electrical outlet systems for conferences and shows.
  • Assist in the renovation, repair, painting and maintenance of facilities and equipment, including bleachers, exercise equipment, furniture and props; setting clocks; removing pool covers.
  • Perform and/or assist in replacing washers in faucets, repairing electrical plugs and cords, and related work.
  • Perform cleaning and custodial duties such as sweeping, scrubbing, vacuuming, mopping, stripping, waxing and polishing floors, operating power cleaning and buffing equipment, dusting, washing windows, walls and cleaning woodwork, emptying waste baskets and waste receptacles and related duties.
  • Coordinate custodial work performed by contract personnel, ensuring that work is completed in a timely manner.
  • Maintain simple records, such as logs and timecards.
  • Operate automotive equipment, such as a van, forklift and hydraulic power lift.
  • Operate trash and recycling compactors; operate electric dumpster mover.
  • May guide the work of unskilled part‑time employees.
  • May be utilized in any City building as a Custodian when necessary.
  • Work a flexible schedule including weekends, evenings and holidays.
  • Support the relationship between the City of Monterey and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors and City staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality of work‑related issues and City information.
  • Perform other job‑related duties within the scope of this job classification as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience involving public contact; experience in custodial, meeting room set‑ups and/or facility maintenance environments desirable.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, tools, materials and equipment used in general building maintenance and cleaning operations.
  • Safety practices to be used in building cleaning and minor maintenance work; adherence to safety practices and procedures.
  • Customer service techniques.

Skills in:

  • Reading, understanding and applying written instructions, including work procedures, product labels, material safety data sheets and equipment instruction manuals.
  • Performing a variety of general custodial and building maintenance work.
  • Maintaining simple records such as logs and time cards.
  • Setting up various items of equipment such as furniture, gym equipment, sound systems and lights and operating hand and power tools used in building maintenance.
  • Following oral and written instructions.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.
  • Dealing courteously with the general public, in‑house personnel, community members and stakeholders.
  • Custodial cleaning methods and practices.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
  • Standing and walking for extended periods of time and/or walking distances of at least one mile.
  • Lifting: ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds, including bending at the knees to facilitate proper lifting techniques.
